Lilian Weng, former safety VP, returns to OpenAI to lead key recursive self-improvement research

Lilian Weng, co-founder of AI startup Thinking Machines, has left the company citing health concerns and is returning to OpenAI to lead a senior research team, according to TechCrunch. She will head a top-level group focused on recursive self-improvement — a process where AI systems iteratively improve their own capabilities, which OpenAI considers one of the most critical safety challenges ahead.
OpenAI confirmed her return, Dataconomy reported. Weng previously spent nearly seven years at OpenAI building its safety infrastructure before co-founding Thinking Machines alongside former OpenAI CEO Mira Murati.
Weng stepped down from Thinking Machines because the stress and workload of running a startup became unsustainable, TechCrunch reported. She said she needed to focus on her health. Startup life — with its long hours and constant pressure — proved too much, even for one of AI's most experienced researchers.
Murati responded publicly with support. 'We'll miss you; it's been amazing building Thinky together,' she wrote. 'I'm glad you're prioritizing your health. Thank you for everything.' The warm farewell signals no hard feelings between the two co-founders, Whalesbook noted.
During her nearly seven years at OpenAI, Weng built much of the lab's safety backbone. She created the fine-tuning API and moderation endpoints. She also unified OpenAI's safety programs into a single team of more than 80 scientists, according to Dataconomy.
Weng also contributed to GPT-4 across pre-training data, safety, evaluations, and deployment. She later served as VP of Research and Safety. Her deep institutional knowledge makes her a natural fit to lead one of OpenAI's most sensitive new research efforts, Mezha reported.
