GOP Lawmaker Urges Trump to Resume Full Military Exercises With South Korea

Republican Rep. Rich McCormick of Georgia is pushing back against President Trump's decision to scale back joint military drills with South Korea. Bellingham Herald reported that McCormick, a combat veteran and member of the House Armed Services Committee, wants Trump to restore the exercises. The push comes after Trump announced he would reduce the drills to improve relations with North Korea's Kim Jong Un.
The US and South Korea had agreed to shorten this month's military exercise by six days following Trump's announcement. Mahoning Matters noted that McCormick argues stronger military integration with South Korea benefits American force projection in Asia. North Korea responded to the original scaling-back decision by launching short-range ballistic missiles.
McCormick believes the US should demonstrate stronger loyalty to South Korea, a longtime ally in Asia. Sun Herald reported that McCormick contends joint military exercises help the US project military power across the region. As a House Armed Services Committee member, McCormick carries weight on defense matters within Congress.
Trump announced the reduction through social media, citing his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Sacramento Bee reported that this decision led the US and South Korea to trim the planned military drills. The temporary halt was part of Trump's broader effort to improve diplomatic ties with North Korea.
North Korea rejected the scaling-back decision as unimportant to its interests. Miami Herald reported that North Korea responded by launching a series of short-range ballistic missiles. The missile test demonstrated that reducing drills alone may not appease Pyongyang's leadership.
