Carolina Hurricanes Coach Rod Brind’Amour Secures Another Stanley Cup Victory, Making NHL History
Rod Brind'Amour has won the Stanley Cup again. The Carolina Hurricanes coach guided his team to a 3-0 shutout of the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 6 on June 14, clinching the 2026 championship and Carolina's second title in franchise history, Coast Mountain News reported.
The win capped a dominant postseason run. Carolina went 16-3 through four rounds, according to FloHockey — one of the best marks in the four-round era of the NHL playoffs.
Brind'Amour Joins a Four-Person Club in NHL History
Brind'Amour is now only the fourth person in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup as both captain and head coach of the same team, according to NHL.com. He joins legends Toe Blake (Montreal), Hap Day (Toronto), and Cooney Weiland (Boston) in that exclusive group.
He has spent 26 years in the Carolina organization. Ten years as a player, one in development, seven as an assistant coach, and the last eight as head coach. Brind'Amour said after the win, "I wanted it so bad for them... to see the look on their faces is priceless," Coast Mountain News reported.
Rookie Goalie and 37-Year-Old Captain Steal the Show
Jordan Staal won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. At 37, he became the first player in NHL history to go 17 years between Cup wins — his last came with Pittsburgh in 2009, per CBS Sports. He said after the clincher, "The boys were grinding today, my goodness."
Goalie Brandon Bussi was the other star. Coach Brind'Amour switched to Bussi in Game 4, down 2-1 in the series. Bussi stopped 22 shots in the Game 6 shutout. He became the first goalie since 1975 to win a Cup-clinching game without playing in the first three rounds, according to Triangle Sports Network.
From 'Frauds' Label to Champions After Years of Near-Misses
Carolina had reached the Eastern Conference Finals in 2019, 2023, and 2025 without winning the Cup. Critics called them perennial underachievers, according to Lindy's Sports. Former NHLer Paul Bissonnette called this Hurricanes squad the "most disrespected wagon probably to ever win the Stanley Cup."
The franchise went nine years without a playoff bid before Brind'Amour took over as coach in 2018. Since then, owner Tom Dundon's franchise value has jumped from $230 million to $2.66 billion, per 365247 Sports. Carolina enters next season with just two unrestricted free agents, making them early favorites to repeat in 2027, according to WRAL.
Raleigh Celebrates Its Biggest Sporting Moment in City History
The city of Raleigh is planning a championship parade for June 20 at 11:00 a.m. ET in downtown. Mayor Janet Cowell officially proclaimed June 20 as "Carolina Hurricanes Day," saying the team has helped turn Raleigh from a "college town" into an "economic powerhouse," per the City of Raleigh.
Former Governor Roy Cooper, a lifelong Hurricanes fan, said the win "puts North Carolina on the map" and expressed hope to drink Sun Drop — a local citrus soda — out of the Stanley Cup, the Raleigh News and Observer reported. The parade is expected to be the largest sporting event in Raleigh's history.
