Nikon Announces Major ZR Firmware Update and New Cinema Lens Series

Nikon says the new Log3G10 and REDWideGamutRGB options will let filmmakers access RED color science in smaller H.265 files instead of always using the larger R3D NE format. The adjustable high-ISO noise-reduction setting is also intended to address the excessive processing and softness reported in existing H.265 footage.
Several frequently requested ZR features are not confirmed for firmware V2.00, including more-compressed R3D NE options, a compressed 10-bit 4:2:2 codec, true 24 fps, RED-style false color, and a fix for the heavily processed H.265 image.
The NIKKOR Z CINEMA T1.9 VV lenses are being designed to cover the RED V-RAPTOR X VV’s 40.96-by-21.60mm sensor, extending beyond conventional full-frame image coverage.
Unlike many cinema lenses that rely exclusively on manual focus, Nikon’s VV lenses will use high-precision autofocus motors aimed at solo operators and fast-paced video production.
RED’s planned remote-control support is expected to cover both the RED CONTROL and RED CONTROL PRO applications, expanding remote operation of the ZR beyond the camera’s own controls.
