Helicopter Crashes Near Okehampton, Prompting Road Closures and Ongoing Police Investigation

A helicopter crashed into a field near Sourton Down, close to Okehampton and the A30, in the early hours of June 3, with reports first emerging around 4:30 a.m. Devon and Cornwall Police said emergency services are on scene and that the incident is ongoing as they investigate. Several road closures were put in place around the A386 and near the A30 Sourton Cross slip and services area, including parts of the A386 between the A30 at Sourton Down and the A3079 Fowley Cross. Authorities have not yet said whether anyone was injured, and the cause of the crash remains unknown.
Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Emergency services are at the scene after a crash involving a helicopter in a field at Sourton Down” and that “Several road closures are in place around the A386 and A30 Sourton Cross slip and services area.”
Traffic data from Inrix reported that “A386 Bowerland Road in both directions [was] closed due to police incident from A30 (Sourton Cross, Sourton Down) to A3079 Holsworthy Road (Fowley Cross).”
Devon Alert advised drivers that “The A386 between A30 Sourton Down and the A3079 Fowley Cross, Okehampton is currently closed due to a police incident” and urged motorists to “Please use an alternative route.”
BBC reported the police message was posted on Facebook and included the line: “The incident is ongoing and we will share more updates as we have them.”
