Godolphin's Rebel's Romance Retires After Celebrated Globetrotting Career and Nine Group One Wins

His first win came back in October on the AW at Newcastle in a Novice Stakes race worth just £3,428.57.
By age three, a dominant display in the UAE Derby made it look like he was destined for a stellar career on the dirt.
Injury unfortunately knocked him out of the 2021 Belmont Stakes.
North America’s Champion Male Turf Horse at the 2024 Eclipse Awards acknowledged his global impact.
He produced a course-record performance in the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Turf.
Rebel's Romance, one of the most successful horses Godolphin has ever trained, has been retired at age eight after a remarkable career spanning seven seasons. The son of Dubawi won 22 of his 32 starts, earned more than £12 million in prize money, and claimed nine Group One victories across four continents, according to Racing Post.
His final win came at Newmarket in the Group 2 Princess of Wales's Stakes on the July course. Trainer Charlie Appleby called the decision "sad but expected," praising the horse for taking the team on "an unforgettable journey," according to Blood Horse.
Rebel's Romance's story began quietly. His first win came in a novice stakes race at Newcastle on the all-weather track, worth just £3,428.57. Few could have predicted what would follow. By age three, he dominated the UAE Derby, making it look like a dirt career was his destiny, according to Turf Diario.
Injury then changed his path. He was ruled out of the 2021 Belmont Stakes, one of America's most famous races. But the setback proved only temporary. He shifted focus to the turf — grass racing — and never looked back. His career earnings grew to more than $15.6 million in total purses, according to TrueNicks.
Rebel's Romance won the Breeders' Cup Turf twice. His 2022 victory at Keeneland was particularly stunning — he set a course record in the process. The Breeders' Cup Turf is one of the top grass races in North America, drawing horses from around the world.
He also won the Dubai Sheema Classic, the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot, and the Yorkshire Cup. Jockey William Buick rode him for most of his career. At the 2024 Eclipse Awards, North America named him Champion Male Turf Horse, recognising his global impact, according to Blood Horse.
Trainer Charlie Appleby praised every member of the team at Moulton Paddocks who helped care for Rebel's Romance over the years. He said the horse "took us on an unforgettable journey" and described his retirement as a moment of both sadness and pride, according to Irvine Times.
Buick echoed those feelings. He highlighted the enormous global following Rebel's Romance built up during his career. Few horses win big races in Dubai, Germany, the United States, and Qatar. Rebel's Romance did all of that — and more — across 32 starts over seven seasons.
With nine Group One wins and £12 million in prize money, Rebel's Romance is widely regarded as Godolphin's most successful horse ever. Racing Post ranked him as the second-highest earner ever trained in Britain, a list that includes some of the sport's greatest names.
His retirement closes a chapter on a career that was built on resilience, global ambition, and consistency. He won races on four continents. He set course records. He earned major honours in three countries. As Turf Diario put it, he leaves behind "a truly global legacy."
