India Orders Google to Remove Firebase Accounts Linked to Bank Phishing Scams

India's government has ordered Google to remove hundreds of Firebase accounts after discovering criminals using the platform to impersonate major banks and steal money from people. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) directed the takedown of at least 57 websites and databases in August alone, according to Reuters. Scammers created fake banking pages on Firebase that mimicked State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank to distribute malware and steal financial information.
Google and Firebase have three hours to remove accounts after receiving notices or face liability, Reuters reported. Criminals have increasingly moved to Firebase over the past year because it offers free tools and powerful database features that other platforms don't provide as easily.
Firebase, Google's web development platform, has become a favorite tool for Indian scam operators. The service offers generous free options and database capabilities that rival paid competitors. Criminals use these tools to build phishing pages—fake websites that look like real banks—to trick people into entering passwords and financial details.
India's top financial institutions have become targets. Scammers created Firebase-hosted pages mimicking State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank, according to Reuters. The fake sites trick users into downloading malware or sharing sensitive information. Once infected, criminals can drain bank accounts and steal personal data directly from victims' phones.
The I4C issued formal notices demanding Google remove the malicious accounts immediately. Reuters reports that Google and Firebase have just three hours to act after receiving notice. If they fail to comply, the notices make them legally liable for the ongoing fraud. This aggressive timeline forces rapid action across platforms.
Scam operators abandoned earlier free tools and migrated to Firebase starting last year. The platform's combination of free access and robust database features attracted criminals looking for a stable hosting solution. Firebase's legitimate usefulness for developers made it harder to monitor for abuse compared to obviously sketchy platforms.
