Amazon Makes Alexa+ Free on Fire TV in US, Expanding AI Features Automatically

Alexa+ is expanding beyond the US in practice, with the service already available on Fire TV devices there and a stated plan to roll out to more regions. In addition to US availability on Fire TV, Alexa+ is already accessible on devices from brands such as Hisense and Panasonic, and Amazon cites UK, Canada, Mexico, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, Brazil and France as current non-US markets with more countries/regions expected later this year and up to 10 additional regions in 2027.
Alexa+ previously cost 19.99–20 per month for non-Prime users; free access on Fire TV is a significant price change that broadens access for US customers.
Amazon says you don’t need to take any action to get Alexa+—the upgrade happens automatically and you don’t have to download an app or sign up for anything.
Alexa+ now emphasizes mood-based and context-aware recommendations (for example, asking for ‘top-rated thrillers’ or ‘historical dramas with a strong female lead’) and can show on-screen camera feeds, with usage metrics indicating nearly twice as many conversations compared with the older Alexa.
This move is part of a broader industry trend of embedding AI features into consumer electronics, with competitors like Google introducing Gemini on Google TV and Roku upgrading its voice assistant, underscoring a wider push to integrate conversational AI into everyday devices.
Amazon is making Alexa+ free on all compatible Fire TV devices in the United States, starting today — no Prime subscription required. The move removes a paywall that previously charged non-Prime users up to $19.99 per month, according to Android Police.
The upgrade is automatic. Users with a current-generation Fire TV Stick, Fire TV Cube, Ember smart TV, or a compatible third-party TV from brands like Hisense or Panasonic do not need to download anything or sign up, according to Daily Guardian.
Alexa+ is a step up from the original Alexa voice assistant. It uses conversational AI to understand natural, back-and-forth requests. Instead of saying "play action movies," users can ask for "top-rated thrillers" or "historical dramas with a strong female lead" and get smart results, according to TechBuzz.
Alexa+ can also pull up live camera feeds on screen and control smart home devices through voice. Amazon says users are already having nearly twice as many conversations with Alexa+ compared to the older version. That jump in engagement is a key reason Amazon is pushing the upgrade so broadly.
Until today, Alexa+ cost up to $19.99 per month for anyone without a Prime membership. Making it free on Fire TV is a big shift. It means tens of millions of Fire TV users in the US can now access Amazon's most advanced AI assistant at no extra cost, according to Android Police.
The move also strengthens Amazon's device ecosystem. With free Alexa+, more users may rely on Fire TV for shopping, smart home controls, and daily tasks — all tied back to Amazon's broader platform. TechBuzz called it "a decisive move" in the AI assistant market.
Alexa+ is already live in several markets outside the US, including the UK, Canada, Mexico, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Brazil. Amazon says it plans to add more regions later this year, according to TechBuzz.
The company has also committed to bringing Alexa+ to up to 10 more regions by 2027. Amazon says more Fire TV devices and product categories may also be added to the free Alexa+ rollout as the year goes on.
Amazon is not alone in this race. Google has added its Gemini AI to Google TV devices. Roku has upgraded its own voice assistant with smarter AI features. Every major TV platform is now trying to build a more conversational, AI-driven experience, according to TechBuzz.
The broader trend is clear: AI assistants are becoming standard features on streaming devices, not paid extras. By going free first and at scale, Amazon is betting that deeper daily engagement with Alexa+ will strengthen its hold on the living room.
