Amazon Cancels Martin Gero-Led Stargate Series Over Mainstream Appeal Concerns

Amazon has canceled a new Stargate TV series that was ordered in November 2025, and the reported decision reflects concerns that the project—led by writer/showrunner Martin Gero—would appeal mainly to diehard franchise fans rather than broader audiences. Variety reports that Gero’s planned vision was viewed as insufficient for mainstream reach, despite his deep ties to Stargate through prior series including SG-1 and Atlantis. The unrealized show also had prominent producers attached, including Roland Emmerich and Safehouse Pictures executives Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell, with longtime Stargate leaders Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi serving as consulting producers. Amazon said it remains interested in finding new ways to continue the Stargate franchise, but the Gero-led series itself will not move forward. The cancellation arrives after years of fan anticipation following Amazon’s acquisition of MGM and the Stargate rights, with no plot details released before the project was scrapped.
When the series was first announced in late 2025, Martin Gero said, “Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis… I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase,” adding to fans that “For those who've kept the gate active… this one's for you.”
The original November 2025 announcement video included not just the core creative team, but also community representatives GateWorld.net’s Darren Sumner and DialTheGate.com’s David Read, alongside Gero and consulting producers Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi.
Beyond Roland Emmerich and Safehouse Pictures’ Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell, Variety reports that Dean Devlin was also attached as an executive producer on the canceled series.
Variety contextualized Stargate’s franchise footprint: it began as the 1994 film starring James Spader and Kurt Russell, then expanded via Stargate SG-1 (10 seasons) and Stargate Atlantis (five seasons, 2004–2008).
