Apple Releases Xcode Beta With iPhone Duo Tools

Xcode 27.1 beta includes Swift 6.4, along with SDKs for iOS 27.1, iPadOS 27.1 and Apple’s other operating systems.
The update adds a new Display group in Xcode’s canvas, allowing developers to preview app content on the iPhone Duo’s alternative display configurations without relying solely on the simulator.
Apple says existing apps that are not updated should continue to run on the iPhone Duo, but they may not properly fill or take advantage of the available display area.
Apple’s developer materials provide downloadable Figma and Sketch kits, workshops and additional guidance to help teams plan iPhone Duo interfaces before the hardware becomes available.
Apple has released Xcode 27.1 beta with tools to help developers prepare apps for the iPhone Duo foldable smartphone, set to launch on October 23. MacRumors reports the beta includes an iPhone Duo simulator, iOS 27.1 SDK support, and design resources that let teams test how apps work across the device's changing screen sizes, orientations, and folded and unfolded states.
Developers face a tight one-month timeline before the device launches. The beta comes with limitations — StandBy functionality isn't available yet, and app extension support is limited. MacRumors notes that apps not updated for the foldable may still run but won't properly use the available screen space.
The beta includes Swift 6.4 plus SDKs for iOS 27.1, iPadOS 27.1, and other Apple operating systems. A new Display group in Xcode's canvas lets developers preview app content on the iPhone Duo's different screen configurations without running the simulator every time. This speeds up the design process.
Apple provides downloadable Figma and Sketch kits so designers can start planning iPhone Duo interfaces right away. The company also offers workshops and guidance documents. MacRumors confirms these materials help teams prepare before the hardware ships, reducing scrambling closer to launch.
Apps need true responsive redesigns, not just scaled-up iPhone layouts. The iPhone Duo's folding screen changes everything — developers must account for hinge gaps, different orientations, and split-screen multitasking modes. Apps that skip updates will technically run but deliver a poor experience.
With roughly 30 days until launch, developers are working fast. MacRumors reports initial simulator launches can be slow, and debugging app extensions remains limited in this beta. Teams must prioritize core features and multitasking layouts to ship quality apps on day one.
