White Sox Catcher Kyle Teel Placed on IL with High Ankle Sprain, Missing 6-12 Weeks

Chicago White Sox catcher Kyle Teel has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a high ankle sprain and could miss up to 12 weeks, according to AP News. The injury happened during a game against the Texas Rangers, when Teel hurt his left ankle.
Manager Will Venable confirmed the severity of the injury. Teel, just 24 years old, has already missed time this season with hamstring and knee problems. He had played in only 19 games before going down again.
Teel was off to a solid start in his limited time on the field. He posted 2 home runs and 14 RBIs in just 19 games, AP News reported. Those numbers showed real promise for a young catcher still finding his footing in the majors.
But his 2025 season has been a constant battle. He first missed time with a hamstring injury, then dealt with a knee issue. Now a high ankle sprain — one of the most serious ankle injuries an athlete can suffer — threatens to wipe out most of his first full big-league year.
Teel did not arrive in Chicago quietly. He was one of four prospects the White Sox received from the Boston Red Sox in December 2024, according to Bakersfield.com. The trade sent left-handed pitcher Garrett Crochet to Boston in a major offseason deal.
That trade put a spotlight on Teel from day one. White Sox fans and analysts saw him as a building block for the team's future. His repeated injuries in 2025 have made it hard to see what that future looks like right now.
A high ankle sprain is different from a common ankle sprain. It affects the ligaments above the ankle joint, not below it. These injuries take much longer to heal and can linger if not treated carefully. A 6-to-12-week timeline puts Teel's return anywhere from mid-summer to late in the season.
The White Sox placed him on the 10-day injured list as a formality, Winnipeg Free Press noted. The real concern is the longer recovery window. Chicago will need to find catching depth to fill the gap while Teel works his way back.
Chicago is already one of the weaker teams in the American League. Losing Teel for potentially three months makes an already difficult situation harder. The White Sox will now need to rely on backups behind the plate for much of the summer.
Teel's development was supposed to be a bright spot in what could be another long rebuilding year. His injuries have slowed that process significantly. How he recovers — and when he returns — will be one of the most important storylines in Chicago for the rest of 2025.
