Powassan Voodoos Announce Signing of Talented U18 AAA Trappers Forward Cedar Montreuil
The Powassan Voodoos have signed 17-year-old forward Cedar Montreuil, making him the team's first new recruit for the 2026–27 season. The Sudbury Star reported the Mattawa native posted 34 goals and 25 assists — 59 points in just 35 games — while helping the North Bay U18 AAA Trappers win the Great North U18 championship.
Montreuil is no stranger to the Voodoos. He has been affiliated with the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League club for two seasons, attending his first prospects camp in July 2024, according to Northern News.
A Natural Goal Scorer Steps Up to Junior A
Voodoos head coach Peter Goulet did not hold back in his praise. "Cedar brings energy every game and is a natural goal scorer," Goulet said, per BayToday. The 17-year-old also posted 16 goals in 9 playoff games over the last two seasons — a number that caught the eye of scouts across the region.
Montreuil described the signing as a lifelong goal. "It feels great because growing up in North Bay, it has always been the goal to make it to the next level and play for the Voodoos," he said, according to The Sudbury Star. At 5-foot-8 and 172 pounds, some scouts have flagged his size, but note his physical style and willingness to play in hard areas as key strengths.
Voodoos and Trappers Formalize a Local Development Pipeline
This signing is the first major move since the Voodoos and the North Bay & District Trappers AAA Hockey Association signed a formal Development Agreement in April 2026. The deal was built to keep top local talent in the region. Voodoos GM Chris Dawson said, "From day one, we have been consistently signing and developing North Bay Trappers — many starting as affiliates," per The Crag and Canyon.
The 2025–26 Voodoos roster already featured 10 former Trappers players, including captain Justin Rousseau. Mark Lockhart, president of the Trappers association, said the goal is clear: "We are becoming a desired destination for AAA hockey players," according to Shoreline Beacon.
Voodoos Look to Bounce Back After Painful Playoff Exit
Powassan finished 2nd overall in the NOJHL in 2025–26 with 75 points. But the season ended in a sweep loss to the Soo Eagles after a controversial overtime goal protest was denied in late March, per Stratford Beacon Herald. The team held its year-end banquet celebrating a season that, in their own words, "ended too soon."
Signing Montreuil early signals the Voodoos are building fast. Key veterans have departed, including defender Bruce Grey, who is committed to the Prague Guardians. Locking down the GNU18 championship's top scorer gives the team a young, high-energy piece to build around heading into the new season.
What Comes Next: Prospects Camp and a Shot at the OHL
Montreuil is set to join the Voodoos at their Summer Prospects Camp on July 4–5 at Pete Palangio Arena in North Bay. His performance there will be closely watched. The Voodoos serve as a primary affiliate of the OHL's North Bay Battalion, meaning a strong camp could earn Montreuil an Affiliate Player card with the Battalion as early as this fall, according to Paris Star Online.
Under NOJHL rules, 17-year-old players must appear in at least 80% of regular-season games and receive four hours of practice time each week. That policy is designed to protect younger players' development. For Montreuil, it means a near-guaranteed path to consistent ice time in his first Junior A season.
