Marotta Asset Management trimmed its position in the SPDR S&P 600 Small Cap Value ETF (SLYV) by 16.4% in the first quarter, selling 7,003 shares to hold 35,663 shares worth about $3.38 million, according to Watchlist News. The sale leaves the firm owning roughly 0.08% of the ETF.
The move was part of a broader portfolio reshuffling. Marotta cut several ETF positions while boosting its stake in at least one fund, signaling a shift in strategy for the period.
Despite trimming, Vanguard Mid-Cap Value ETF (VOE) remains Marotta's largest holding by far. The firm sold 6,414 shares, reducing its stake by 2.9%, according to Ticker Report. It now holds 217,452 shares valued at about $40.15 million. That single position makes up roughly 7.4% of the entire portfolio.
The second-biggest position is Columbia EM Core ex-China ETF (XCEM), per Watchlist News. Marotta sold 37,102 shares, cutting its stake by 4.1% to 872,063 shares. Those shares are worth about $35.92 million and represent roughly 6.6% of the portfolio.
Marotta made additional cuts beyond its top holdings. It reduced its position in Franklin FTSE Switzerland ETF (FLSW) by 5.6%, leaving 246,951 shares worth about $10.15 million. That holding ranks as the firm's 20th biggest position and accounts for about 1.9% of the portfolio, according to Watchlist News.
The firm also cut its iShares MSCI Austria ETF (EWO) stake by 5.9%, selling 16,971 shares to hold 272,075 shares, per Ticker Report. It trimmed its Schwab Short-Term U.S. Treasury ETF (SCHO) position by 4.8% as well. The cuts suggest Marotta was broadly pulling back from several geographic and fixed-income exposures in Q1.
Not every move was a cut. Marotta grew its stake in SPDR MSCI USA StrategicFactors ETF (QUS) by 16.0% in the first quarter. The firm now holds 66,803 shares worth about $11.5 million. That makes QUS its 15th largest holding.
The StrategicFactors approach blends quality, value, and low-volatility signals into one fund. The 16% increase stands out against the backdrop of cuts elsewhere. It points to Marotta leaning into a more defensive, multi-factor U.S. equity strategy during the quarter, according to Watchlist News.
