Sony launches a purchase lottery for the PS5 Pro in Japan amid severe console shortages.

Sony has launched a lottery-based purchase program for the PS5 Pro in Japan amid stock shortages, requiring applicants to use a Japan-registered Sony account with at least 60 hours of PS4 or PS5 play during the specified two-year period. If applications outnumber available consoles, selection will be random, so meeting the requirements does not guarantee a purchase. The shortage is also affecting the U.S., where major retailers have repeatedly sold out; one report says Sony expects limited availability to continue into early 2027. The shortages have coincided with renewed interest ahead of Grand Theft Auto 6, though the connection between the game and sustained demand is not certain.
For the Japanese application, gameplay had to be recorded between September 27, 2024, and September 27, 2026, while signed in to the same account used to apply. Applicants also need a Japan-registered Sony account using PlayStation online services, with its sign-in ID linked to their My Sony ID.
The Japanese application window closes October 7 at 11:59 p.m. Japan time; results are scheduled to begin being announced around October 26, and console deliveries are planned for early to mid-November.
In the U.S., the shortage had lasted three weeks without a substantial restock by late September. A stock tracker recorded 71 restock events across four retailers over three days, with each batch selling out within minutes; reported resale prices ranged from $1,200 to $1,499.
Sony’s Japanese lottery may also make it harder for resellers to obtain consoles: one report said the gameplay threshold is intended to steer scarce stock toward active players and deter resellers.
