Infineon Opens €5 Billion Smart Power Fab in Dresden, Boosting Europe's Chip Autonomy

Infineon Technologies opened its €5 billion Smart Power Fab in Dresden on July 2, 2026 — three months ahead of schedule. The facility is the world's largest factory for power semiconductors, and the biggest single investment in Infineon's history, according to Bisinfotech.
The opening is being called the EU Chips Act's first major win. CEO Jochen Hanebeck said at the ceremony: "Technological sovereignty does not begin with words, but with factories like this one." The plant processes 300-millimeter wafers and will create roughly 1,000 new jobs in Dresden, Evertiq reported.
Power semiconductors are the "muscles" of modern electronics. They manage voltage and current in electric vehicles, wind turbines, AI data centers, and industrial machines. Unlike the "brain" chips made by Taiwan's TSMC, power chips are Infineon's specialty — and global demand is exploding, according to EE News Europe.
The Dresden fab goes beyond standard silicon. It also processes gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC) — advanced materials that handle higher voltages more efficiently. Some wafers are shaved down to just 20 micrometers thin. Infineon says its new 300mm GaN technology yields 2.3 times more chips per wafer than older 200mm methods, according to Evertiq.
The project did not happen quietly. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and then-Chancellor Olaf Scholz attended the groundbreaking in May 2023. The European Commission formally approved roughly €920 million in subsidies in February 2025 under the EU Chips Act and the IPCEI program, Silicon Saxony reported.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz addressed the opening via video link. "This investment shows that competitive, cutting-edge semiconductor production in our country is possible," he said, according to Bisinfotech. Additional funding came from the German federal government and the Free State of Saxony, rounding out a public-private deal years in the making.
The new fab plugs into one of Europe's most important tech regions. Silicon Saxony already has around 2,500 companies, 80,000 workers, and nine universities nearby. That network gives Infineon a ready supply of engineers and research partners, Bisinfotech noted.
The scale of construction was enormous: 150,000 cubic meters of concrete, 25,000 tons of steel, and a six-story building with a clean room supported by a 5,000-ton steel frame. At full capacity, the plant is projected to add €5 billion in annual revenue. Experts predict a 1:6 jobs multiplier — meaning one direct job could support six more in the local supply chain, according to Evertiq.
The Dresden opening stands out because the broader EU Chips Act has struggled. Intel cancelled its €30 billion Magdeburg fab in August 2025, citing weak customer demand. Infineon succeeded where Intel didn't because automakers and energy companies need power chips right now, analysts told EE News Europe.
Still, some market watchers say Europe is "securing its niche" rather than becoming a true global semiconductor leader. Rival chipmakers like Rohm and Toshiba are already exploring alliances to fight back against Infineon's new scale. The plant does set a green benchmark, though: it runs on 100% renewable electricity, recycles water, and is pursuing LEED Gold certification — with a 25,000-square-meter lizard habitat built on-site as a biodiversity offset, according to Bisinfotech.
