Researchers Discover World's Largest, Oldest Whale Graveyard in Deep Indian Ocean

The team identified multiple whale species in the fossil record, including five beaked-whale species—specifically mentioning Andrews’ beaked whale (Mesoplodon bowdoini) and strap-toothed whale (Mesoplodon layardii)—and one baleen whale: the sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis).
The largest carcass was reported as a dead Antarctic minke whale about 5 meters long, identified using the “distinct ear bone shape” plus genetic analysis.
Beyond the mapped findings, researchers extrapolated that the wider area could contain roughly “seven to eight whale carcasses” and about “750 fossils per square kilometer,” and another report says the zone may hold “over 10 million carcasses” accumulated over at least 5.3 million years.
The study reports a depth record for active whale-fall ecosystems and details a key chemical driver: bacteria living without light or oxygen “break down the oils in the whales’ bones,” producing hydrogen sulfide that powers the communities at the carcasses.
The site includes unusual, potentially exclusive or range-expanding taxa: Discover reports brittle stars appearing to live exclusively on whale bones and a “sea daisy” (previously known only from sunken wood and hydrothermal vents) found living on whale bones at nearly 23,000 feet—deeper than any record of its kind.
Scientists have found the world's largest, deepest, and oldest whale graveyard on the floor of the Indian Ocean. The site stretches about 1,200 kilometers across the Diamantina Zone — a V-shaped trench off Australia's coast — at depths between 4,200 and 7,000 meters, according to Nature. Fossil remains there date back 5.3 million years, and researchers estimate the zone may hold over 10 million whale carcasses in total.
The discovery was made using the Chinese deep-sea submersible Fendouzhe, which completed 32 dives to map the site. Researchers found 476 individual fossil sites and five active whale-fall ecosystems — places where whale carcasses still support living communities. The findings were published in the journal Nature on June 10, 2026, CBS News reported.
The Diamantina Zone formed 50 to 60 million years ago when Australia and Antarctica drifted apart. Its V-shaped trench acts like a funnel, concentrating sinking whale carcasses from the surrounding ocean into a narrow strip, Live Science reported. That geometry helps explain why so many remains ended up in one place.
The oldest fossils date to the Early Pliocene, about 5.3 million years ago. Researchers found up to 759.5 whale remains per square kilometer in some areas. Lead author Dr. Xiaotong Peng of the Chinese Academy of Sciences said the scale was "completely unexpected" and "far beyond anything we had imagined," according to AFP.
When a whale sinks, bacteria break down the oils in its bones in the dark, low-oxygen depths. That process produces hydrogen sulfide — a chemical that powers entire food webs without sunlight. It works the same way as life near hydrothermal vents. Researchers found 35 different animal types on a single carcass. One 5-meter Antarctic minke whale supported 2,840 individual organisms, Discover Magazine reported.
The five active whale-fall sites set a new depth record at roughly 7,001 meters — breaking the previous record of 4,204 meters. Before this find, scientists had never confirmed a living whale-fall ecosystem at hadal depths. Craig Smith of the University of Hawai'i called the discovery "truly extraordinary," noting that life adapted to crushing pressure by using whale energy instead of sunlight, according to Popular Science.
Researchers cataloged jellyfish, brittle stars, tubeworm-like organisms, and bone-boring worms at the site. Some may be new to science. Discover Magazine reported that certain brittle stars appear to live exclusively on whale bones. A "sea daisy" — a tiny animal previously known only from sunken wood and hydrothermal vents — was found living on whale bones at nearly 23,000 feet, deeper than any known record of its kind.

The site also offers a rare climate insight. With over 10 million estimated carcasses, the zone represents a massive carbon sink. Each whale body locks organic carbon into the deep seafloor for millions of years. Researchers say the data will help scientists better understand how much carbon the deep ocean absorbs, TRT World reported.
