Fireworks Trailer Explodes on I-75 North in Tennessee, Halting Traffic for Hours

A trailer loaded with fireworks caught fire and erupted in a series of explosions on I-75 North in Hamilton County, Tennessee, Saturday night, forcing a temporary shutdown and backing up traffic for hours. Smoke and sparks drew motorists’ attention near the Ooltewah area as the fireworks detonated in multiple directions, prompting emergency responders to keep people away from the roadway. Fire departments—including Chattanooga Fire and Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department—arrived quickly, temporarily halting traffic in both directions while crews extinguished flames and cooled smoldering debris. Photos from Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department showed the fireworks trailer was reduced to a charred shell, while the towing pickup truck appeared largely intact aside from scorch marks. Local resident Cameron Parker and others recorded the incident, and the video went viral online with millions of views. Authorities reported no injuries, and lanes began reopening gradually, with traffic starting to move again closer to 11 p.m.
Chattanooga Fire said in a Facebook update that firefighters “responded to a vehicle fire on I-75NB just past the Ooltewah exit Saturday night,” adding that “the situation involved fireworks igniting in various directions, posing a threat to motorists.”
Officials described how the response was coordinated: emergency vehicles traveled northbound in the southbound lanes to help shuttle water to crews working the blaze, and Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department served as the lead agency while Chattanooga crews assisted under a mutual aid agreement.
A Chattanooga Fire spokesperson said the incident occurred outside city limits—Tri-Community led the response—and that the southbound side of the interstate reopened relatively quickly while northbound lanes stayed closed longer as crews monitored the situation.
Witness Cameron Parker explained he pulled over after hearing the explosions before he saw the source: “I literally pulled off to the side of the road because I heard it before I saw it, and then I came across this bridge back here. This is absolutely crazy,” he said.
