Boston Bruins Name Star Forward David Pastrnak As Their 28th Captain

The Boston Bruins named David Pastrnak their 28th captain, ending a vacancy that began when Brad Marchand was traded to Florida in March 2025. Entering his 13th season, Pastrnak has spent his entire NHL career in Boston and recorded 933 points in 833 regular-season games. He has led the Bruins in scoring and reached 100 points in each of the past four seasons. Defenseman Charlie McAvoy was also considered for the captaincy and will serve as Pastrnak’s top alternate, while teammates say leadership will remain a shared responsibility. The appointment comes after Boston’s first-round playoff exit as the team aims to return to contention in the Atlantic Division.
Pastrnak said he was “very grateful and humble and honored” to become captain, adding that his goal was to be “the best version for the team and the Bruins organization.”
Coach Marco Sturm said it was time to fill the role: “It was time for us to turn the page and get a captain in here.”
Pastrnak has reached several franchise scoring milestones: he is tied for first in Bruins history with eight 30-goal seasons, tied for second with five 40-goal seasons, and became the club’s second 60-goal scorer in 2022-23.
Boston played the 2025-26 season without a captain, using Pastrnak, Charlie McAvoy and Hampus Lindholm as its three alternates.
Pastrnak has also recorded 94 points in 96 postseason appearances with Boston.
