Threads Surpasses 500 Million Users, Bolstering Community Features and AI Controls

Meta said Threads’ growth is being driven by Communities, adding that “communities built Threads into what it is,” and it reported Threads added about 100 million new users since last August.
For Threads’ AI controls, Meta/Threads detailed that with “Your Algo” users can request to see more or less of certain topics and choose how long the request lasts—“one, three, or seven days”; “Only you will be able to see your requests,” and users can manage both “Dear Algo” and “Your Algo” in a single unified hub.
Threads said Communities are graduating from beta and is rolling out top requested additions including custom icons and native-language tags, with communities made available directly from the app’s main menu.
Meta reported usage increases across Asia beyond South Korea: time spent was said to be up about 80% in South Korea and about 130% in Japan year-on-year.
Meta added further community engagement mechanisms including “Community Progress” (showing when a topic is close to becoming a community) and awarding “Community Champion” status to more users; it also said it is launching local community features starting with native-language tags in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan and expanding Live Chats to more communities in the coming weeks.
Meta's Threads has crossed 500 million monthly active users, the company announced on June 16, 2026 — adding roughly 100 million new users since August 2025 Neowin. The milestone arrives just weeks before the platform's third anniversary, with Meta crediting its Communities feature as the engine behind the growth.
Threads now sits within striking distance of rival X, which reportedly holds 550–560 million monthly active users Mashable. Meta head of Threads Connor Hayes has said the app is seeing more users open it directly rather than stumbling in through Instagram — a sign of what the company calls "organic discovery."
Threads built its growth on Communities — interest-based groups where users gather around shared topics. Meta said Communities are now leaving beta and moving into the app's main menu for easier access Neowin. New additions include custom community icons and native-language tags launching first in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.
Meta is also adding a "Community Progress" tracker that shows users when a topic is close to becoming a full community Android Headlines. Top contributors can earn "Community Champion" status. Live Chats are expanding to more communities in the coming weeks. Meta put it plainly: "Communities built Threads into what it is."
Time spent on Threads jumped 80% year-over-year in South Korea and 130% in Japan Mashable. South Korea is getting a formal rollout of the Communities function, paired with local topic options, automatic profile topic tags, and community-only reaction icons.
Taiwan has also emerged as a major hub. Taiwanese users now account for roughly 21% of global Threads traffic despite the country's small population The Keyword. In January 2026, Threads surpassed X in daily active users on mobile devices — though X still leads in web-based traffic.
Meta is upgrading its AI feed controls with a new "Your Algo" feature Thurrott. Users can ask to see more or less of certain topics and choose how long the request lasts — one, three, or seven days. Unlike the older "Dear Algo" feature, which required a public post, these requests are private. "Only you will be able to see your requests," Meta said.
Both "Dear Algo" and "Your Algo" now live in a single unified hub Neowin. The change addresses a common complaint: the original feature felt awkward because users had to broadcast their feed preferences to all their followers. The new system keeps those choices between the user and the algorithm.
Global K-pop group BTS joined Threads in mid-June 2026, gaining over 4.2 million followers in less than 72 hours Android Headlines. The move signals Threads' push into global fandom culture, where dedicated fan communities are among the most active on any social platform.
Meta is also rolling out music attachments to posts, letting creators tie songs directly to their content The Keyword. These updates come alongside World Cup 2026 tie-ins, where Threads partnered with soccer stars like Sergio Aguero to host live discussions — targeting one of the last areas where X still had a clear edge over Threads.
