State Farm Distributes $5 Billion Dividend to Auto Customers After Strong Performance

State Farm has started sending out payments from its one-time $5 billion cash-back dividend, and Florida drivers may be among those getting a check. The payout covers customers with qualifying auto policies across the country, according to Naples Daily News.
The dividend applies to more than 49 million vehicles insured by State Farm Mutual. Individual payment amounts are based on a percentage of the premium each customer paid. The full distribution is expected to take several months to complete, Herald Tribune reported.
State Farm says the dividend is possible because of the company's strong financial position. The insurer had a better-than-expected underwriting performance — meaning it paid out less in claims than it collected in premiums. That left the company with extra money to return to policyholders, according to Tallahassee Democrat.
State Farm Mutual is structured as a mutual company. That means it is owned by its policyholders, not outside investors. When the company does well financially, it can share that success directly with customers through dividends like this one.
Eligible customers will get an email or letter from State Farm letting them know about their pending payment. You do not need to apply or file anything to receive the dividend, TC Palm reported. State Farm will reach out to qualifying policyholders directly.
The payment amount is tied to how much you paid in premiums on your qualifying auto policy. So customers who paid higher premiums will generally receive a larger dividend check. State Farm has not published a fixed dollar amount per customer.
The dividend is not limited to Florida, but Floridians with qualifying State Farm auto policies are included in the eligible pool. The program covers policyholders across the country who are insured under State Farm Mutual auto policies, according to News-Press.
More than 49 million vehicles are covered under the program nationwide. Gainesville Sun noted that the distribution process will take several months, so not all customers will receive payments at the same time. Customers are advised to watch for communication from State Farm.
If you have not gotten an email or letter yet, that does not mean you are not eligible. The rollout is happening in waves over several months, News-Journal Online reported. State Farm customers can also log into their online account or call their agent to ask about their status.
Make sure your contact information is up to date with State Farm. If your email address or mailing address is outdated, you could miss the notification about your payment. Customers can update their info through the State Farm app or website, according to NWF Daily News.
