Pudgy Penguins Expands Retail Reach with 15 Million Vibes Trading Cards at Target Nationwide

Each “Vibes” Series 3 pack is described as containing a mix of common, rare, and special-edition cards, with “unique artwork and attributes,” designed to appeal both to existing Pudgy Penguins fans and people unfamiliar with NFTs.
Pudgy Penguins’ broader licensing economics include a revenue-share element: its “licensing model” lets NFT holders receive “5% of net revenue from physical products featuring their individual penguins.”
The Target rollout builds on earlier mass-retail traction: Pudgy Penguins’ physical toys entered “more than 2,000 Walmart stores in 2023,” and CEO Luca Netz said in May 2024 that “more than 1 million toys had been sold over the preceding 12 months.”
Beyond trading cards and toys, Pudgy Penguins is also expanding via gaming: in 2025 it launched the skill-based “Pengu Clash” game on “The Open Network,” with Netz describing gaming as a “vehicle for bringing the project’s intellectual property to wider audiences.”
The crypto market signal around the Target news included more specific context: Cryptobriefing reports that the PENGU token “launched on Solana in Q4 2024” and “rallied roughly 7% around the time of the Target announcement.”
Pudgy Penguins has landed its Vibes Series 3 trading cards on shelves at Target stores across the United States, putting roughly 15 million cards into the hands of mainstream shoppers, according to Bloomingbit. The rollout, built through a partnership with Orange Cap Games, is the NFT brand's largest retail push to date — placing cartoon penguins alongside Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering on Target's trading card aisles.
The news gave the PENGU token a quick lift. Crypto Briefing reports the token rallied roughly 7% around the time of the Target announcement, though it remains about 90% below its all-time high set in December 2024.
Pudgy Penguins started as a collection of 8,888 cartoon penguin NFTs on Ethereum, selling out in under 20 minutes in July 2021. Entrepreneur Luca Netz bought the project in April 2022 for 750 ETH — about $2.5 million — after early founders lost the community's trust. He immediately shifted the brand's focus from digital assets to physical products and licensing, according to MEXC.
The retail strategy moved fast. Pudgy Penguins toys entered more than 2,000 Walmart stores in September 2023. By May 2024, Netz said more than 1 million toys had sold in just 12 months, according to Value the Markets. Series 3 at Target builds directly on that foundation.
Each Series 3 pack includes a mix of common, rare, and special-edition cards with fresh artwork. The set features collaborations with street artists and guest appearances from Moonbirds, another NFT brand — a rare cross-brand move in physical retail, according to The Currency Analytics.
Series 3 also introduces tiered Soulbound Tokens. These are non-transferable digital badges — meaning they cannot be sold or transferred — that Target shoppers can earn by scanning their cards. The idea is to pull everyday buyers into the crypto world without asking them to buy volatile assets. It is a "bridge" for non-crypto users, as Crypto Briefing describes it.
Pudgy Penguins uses a licensing model that pays NFT holders 5% of net revenue from any physical product featuring their specific penguin. The brand uses its Overpass protocol to handle royalty distribution directly on the blockchain, removing legal complexity for holders, according to Value the Markets. Annual brand revenues are estimated at over $50 million, not counting token market value.
That revenue-share structure puts pressure on rival NFT projects like Bored Ape Yacht Club to build similar pipelines if they want to keep holder loyalty. Pudgy Penguins is effectively showing that the IP — not the token — can drive real cash flow from consumers who have never bought a crypto asset.
Trading cards are just one piece of a wider push. In May 2025, Pudgy Penguins launched Pengu Clash, a skill-based multiplayer game on The Open Network, which runs inside Telegram's app with over 1 billion users. Netz called gaming a "vehicle for bringing the project's intellectual property to wider audiences," according to MEXC.
The PENGU token itself launched on Solana in December 2024 with a $1.5 billion airdrop to more than 1 million wallets. Its circulating market cap sits around $420–$434 million today, with each token trading near $0.0067, per Crypto Briefing. Netz's goal is clear: turn a niche NFT project into a global consumer brand — one Target shelf at a time.
