PEGI rating and retail listings suggest Gears E-Day PS5 launch, despite cancellation claims

Conflicting reports are reigniting debate over whether Microsoft’s Gears of War: E-Day will launch on PlayStation 5 after multiple retailers and ratings bodies appeared to point that way. A Walmart listing for PS5 that briefly showed a $99.99 price was quickly removed, while other coverage cited a PEGI age rating for the PS5 version and evidence that a physical PS5 SKU with an assigned UPC barcode exists—though it remains unclear whether those identifiers will ultimately be used. Against that, journalist Jeff Grubb said the PS5 version was planned but later canceled due to an internal decision. With the Xbox Games Showcase and a Gears of War: E-Day Direct expected to clarify platform details, the situation has fueled speculation about whether Microsoft is moving toward a more multiplatform approach for marquee franchises. Overall, the reports suggest the PS5 path may either be real but revised late, or the listings could reflect outdated or placeholder information.
Jeff Grubb said on a Giant Bomb podcast episode that a PS5 version was real but was canceled via an internal decision, quoting: “Gears of War: E-Day was gonna be on PS5. It’s not anymore. That just happened. That was a decision that just got made.”
The brief Walmart PS5 listing wasn’t just a price tag: IGN reported it showed placeholder content including “Placeholder 1,” “TBD 2,” and “TBD 3,” and described the game as a “first-person shooter” with a “pending ESRB rating.”
The GameGPU report adds additional shopping/logistics details: the standard edition’s official retail price is listed as $69.99, with pre-orders for PC and Xbox Series X versions expected to open immediately after the Xbox Games Showcase—while it reported no information yet about PS5 pre-order availability.
Article coverage also frames the PS5 question within Microsoft’s broader exclusivity messaging: it cites an “mission statement emailed to Xbox staff” saying leadership would “reevaluate the company’s approach to exclusivity,” Matt Booty’s warning that the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase would still feature “competing logos,” and Sharma saying spotlighting other platforms was “a miss,” with talks about adjustments happening behind the scenes.
