California Nonprofit Comfort Cub Brings Weighted Bears to 9/11 Families

A California nonprofit, Comfort Cub, is visiting New York City with weighted teddy bears designed to comfort families who lost loved ones during the 9/11 attacks. The bears are intended to remind them that their loved ones are not forgotten. Founder Marcella Johnson created the first Comfort Cub after the death of her infant son, George. The organization has since expanded its efforts to support people experiencing different forms of trauma and loss, including working with police on trauma calls and responding after mass shootings. The weight of the bear provides deep-touch pressure, which she believes can create a sense of calm for people coping with grief.
