Microsoft's Xbox Division Develops Live-Action Sea of Thieves Movie, Joining Expanding Game Adaptations

The Sea of Thieves Season 20 has begun, introducing Custom Seas, signaling ongoing live updates and expansion to the game's world ahead of its live-action film adaptation.
Sea of Thieves already features in-game crossovers and tie-ins, including Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean and potential Monkey Island references, underscoring the franchise's built-in cross-media potential.
Sea of Thieves originally launched in 2018 on Xbox One and PC and later expanded to Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 in 2024, demonstrating broad platform reach that could influence the film’s audience.
Entertainment Weekly reports Sea of Thieves is part of a slate of Xbox adaptations exceeding a dozen projects, including Gears of War at Netflix, a Minecraft Movie (and sequel), Fallout, and Wolfenstein, with Destin Daniel Cretton attached to produce via Hisako Films.
Xbox has a live-action Sea of Thieves movie in development, Entertainment Weekly reported on June 22, 2026. Destin Daniel Cretton — the filmmaker behind Shang-Chi and the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day — is attached to produce through his Hisako Films banner. No director has been named yet.
The announcement puts Sea of Thieves alongside a slate of more than a dozen Xbox screen projects, including Gears of War at Netflix, a Wolfenstein series at Amazon, and a Minecraft Movie sequel, according to GameSpot. The game has attracted 40 million registered players since its 2018 launch.
Sea of Thieves is not a typical video game story. There is no single hero. There is no fixed plot. Players sail, fight, and loot together in an open world. That makes adapting it into a movie unusually tricky — and Xbox knows it. Matt Booty, Xbox's chief content officer, told Entertainment Weekly: "The main character of a Sea of Thieves game is actually the player and the community."
Booty says the film will focus on feel over story. "It's a super social game, but there's a tone... cooperative... you can start to sense what that's going to be like," he said. Industry analysts told Dexerto that this "plotless sandbox" approach is a high-risk bet — similar to how Warner Bros. approached the Minecraft movie before it earned massive box-office returns.
Destin Daniel Cretton is one of Hollywood's most in-demand producers for action-adventure IP, according to Insider Gaming. His Marvel credits and upcoming Spider-Man film signal that Xbox wants big-budget spectacle — not a small indie take on pirates. Hisako Films, his production company, will shepherd the project from development.
The film fits inside Microsoft's larger media push. The company has spent roughly $20 billion on content, platforms, and hardware over the last five years, per The Guardian. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma framed the strategy simply: "We will continue to meet players where they are."
The game is no stranger to big-screen IP. Its 2021 expansion, A Pirate's Life, brought Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean directly into the game world. That crossover proved the brand can share space with major Hollywood franchises without losing its identity, according to Dual Shockers.
The game also expanded to PlayStation 5 in April 2024, growing well beyond its Xbox roots. Season 20 launched on June 18, 2026, adding "Custom Seas" — a sandbox mode that lets up to 24 players set their own rules, per GameRant. Xbox says that social-first design is exactly the DNA it wants the film to carry.
Not everyone is excited. Fans on Reddit worry that a live-action format will strip out the quirky, cartoonish look that makes Sea of Thieves feel unique. Many have called for an animated film instead. Critics warn the movie could end up as a "generic pirate movie" that just uses a familiar brand to secure financing, as noted by Head Topics.
Some media critics also question the timing. Wccftech has reported on internal Xbox restructuring and potential layoffs, suggesting the film announcements may partly serve to reassure investors about the long-term value of Xbox IP — even as hardware sales face pressure. The Sea of Thieves film has no release date or confirmed director yet.
