Lords of the Fallen 2 Shifts to Early 2027, Citing Refinement and Strategic Release Timing

Epic Games Store PC exclusivity for Lords of the Fallen 2 was canceled, reflecting changes to its licensing arrangement for PC distribution.
During Summer Game Fest, CI Games publicly outlined platform support (PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam and Epic Games) for a Fall release, which has since shifted.
There is no firm date yet for Lords of the Fallen 2; the game is now targeted for a Q1 2027 release window.
November 2026 would have pitted Lords of the Fallen 2 against a crowded lineup, with September–October 2026 featuring titles like Silent Hill: Townfall, Control Resonant, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and Modern Warfare 4, plus GTA 6 in November.
CI Games reportedly secured funding to buy out its Epic Games PC exclusivity contract, affecting the game’s distribution model going forward.
CI Games has officially delayed Lords of the Fallen 2 from fall 2026 to Q1 2027, citing a need for more polish and a dangerously crowded release calendar. CEO Marek Tyminski confirmed the shift on X, saying the studio's Gameplay Feedback Team — a group of seasoned Souls-like veterans — identified "meaningful opportunities to refine the experience" that required more time. Push Square and VGChartz both confirmed the announcement.
The delay lands just days after Rockstar Games locked in November 19, 2026 as the release date for Grand Theft Auto VI. That single announcement reshaped the fall release window for the entire industry. For a mid-tier Souls-like, launching anywhere near GTA 6 would have been, as one analyst put it, a "suicide mission."
The autumn 2026 release window had already become a minefield before GTA 6 entered the picture. September 24–25, 2026 features both Control: Resonant from Remedy Entertainment and Onimusha: Way of the Sword from Capcom launching on the same weekend. Silent Hill: Townfall also targets that same stretch. Then Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 arrives October 23. GTA 6 closes the year on November 19. Push Square called it a "Black September" that made the window nearly impossible for a high-difficulty action RPG to break through.
By moving to Q1 2027 — typically January through March — Lords of the Fallen 2 avoids every one of those competitors. The first quarter is historically one of the quietest periods in gaming. That gives the title room to breathe, capture media attention, and reach the 3–4 million unit sales target the studio needs to outperform its predecessor, according to Final Weapon.
The delay story actually starts months earlier. In June 2024, CI Games signed a binding deal with Epic Games for PC exclusivity on the sequel. That deal would have kept the game off Steam on launch day. On May 19, 2026, CI Games signed a separation agreement and bought out that contract entirely, winning back open PC distribution rights including Day 1 availability on Steam, according to research citing Bankier.pl and Game Developer.
The studio raised $19 million in new investor funding in March 2026 to support this move and its broader "Players First" vision. CEO Tyminski announced the fundraise on X. The Epic buyout was expensive, but it gave CI Games full control over its launch timing — a flexibility that proved critical once GTA 6's November date was confirmed. VGChartz noted the game will now release on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC via both Steam and Epic Games Store, and Nintendo Switch 2.
CI Games set up an internal group called the Gameplay Feedback Team specifically to stress-test the sequel before release. The team is made up of veteran Souls-like developers. Their job is to play the game, find problems, and push the studio to fix them before launch. Tyminski said their input drove the decision to delay, pointing to "integration, iteration, and polishing" as the work still ahead. Game GPU reported the quality-focused framing of the announcement.
This focus on quality carries extra weight given the rocky launch of the 2023 Lords of the Fallen reboot. That game sold 2.5 million copies and cost $80.45 million to make and market — a budget it only just broke even on by March 2026, according to a CI Games investor report. A repeat of those technical launch problems could be far more damaging this time, with stakes and expectations both higher.
Fan reaction has been mixed but mostly supportive. Players on Reddit largely welcomed the exit from Epic exclusivity, calling the return to Steam a "major win" for the franchise. The delay to 2027 drew more caution — some fans worry the "polish" message is covering up deeper development trouble. No hard evidence supports that concern, but it reflects the skepticism that follows any delay announcement.
Industry analysts frame the move as smart business. Launching near GTA 6 with a $19 million investment on the line would have been a serious gamble. Q1 2027 offers a real shot at standing out. CI Games has not announced a firm release date yet. For now, the studio says the game is coming — just with more time to get it right. Newsy Today confirmed no specific date has been set within the Q1 2027 window.
