XRP Ledger sets a new transaction record amid rising questions over automated activity.

The earlier 2,768-transaction burst reportedly involved one-drop transfers circulating through a ring of about 20 accounts, which Vet characterized as “layers of probing” by automated bots interacting with one another.

The XRPL’s recent protocol roadmap includes upgrades introduced with xrpld 3.3.0, including BatchV1_1, ConfidentialTransfer, DynamicMPT, PermissionDelegationV1_1 and Sponsor; BatchV1_1 was reportedly closest to reaching the validator-activation threshold on Sept. 14.

CryptoNews found that 2,000 of the 3,254 transactions came from just 20 accounts sending identical one-drop payments in a circular pattern.
Wider analysis shows how little organic human activity drives the ledger. Finance Yahoo reported that Bitquery research found only 0.80% of XRP Ledger transactions since 2013 came from regular users. In August alone, 793 accounts generated 93.2% of monthly transactions—and 767 of those were identified as automated bots.
The transaction surge coincided with progress on the XRP Ledger's technical roadmap. CoinDesk reported that BatchV1_1, a protocol upgrade that bundles linked payments together, came one validator vote away from activation on September 14. The upgrade is part of a larger wave including ConfidentialTransfer, DynamicMPT, and PermissionDelegationV1_1—all designed to expand what the network can do.
These upgrades were introduced in xrpld 3.3.0, the latest version of the ledger software. BatchV1_1 is closest to full activation, which would let validators enable the feature network-wide. Reaching that threshold matters because it signals consensus among node operators that a feature is ready for production use.
The high-volume test exposed infrastructure strain at some nodes. The Crypto Basic reported that Vet warned XRPL node operators to raise WebSocket transaction-subscription message limits after some nodes returned 1008 policy errors during the surge. This error code signals the server hit its data-rate cap and had to reject incoming messages.
The XRP Ledger doesn't enforce a hard ceiling on transactions per ledger. Instead, it uses a "soft target" that adjusts based on how fast validators process blocks. If a ledger exceeds the target but still closes quickly—as happened here in 3.8 seconds—the target can rise automatically. This design prioritizes speed and consensus over raw transaction limits.
The 3,254-transaction record matters less than it appears. Simple one-drop payments require far less processing than complex swaps on decentralized exchanges, NFT operations, or multi-hop payment paths. A raw transaction count doesn't reflect true computational load or network capacity gains. CryptoNews emphasized that the burst does not prove organic adoption is rising.
The data is clear: the XRP Ledger handles high throughput, but most activity comes from bots testing the network, not real payments. Until organic user transactions grow significantly, each new record remains more technical demonstration than adoption milestone.
