Saints Rookie Brock Rechsteiner Ignites Camp Brawl with Cowboys, Fuels Wrestling Switch Talk

Brock Rechsteiner earned a Saints roster spot as an undrafted rookie after strong performances in tryouts, highlighting his path from Jacksonville State to the NFL.
Rechsteiner has enrolled in the WWE Next In Line Program, signaling ongoing wrestling ambitions beyond his NFL development and his wrestling family legacy.
The Oxnard joint practice session reportedly featured seven fights, including punches from Cowboys players and a helmet tossed by Saints center Erik McCoy during the skirmishes.
During the altercation, Caelen Carson grabbed Rechsteiner by the facemask, and Rechsteiner subsequently used a waistlock to take down Cowboys safety Jalen Thompson in a suplex-style finish.
Dallas coach Brian Schottenheimer described the session as ‘fight club,’ saying the team needs to get more work in but acknowledged both sides were stirring the incident and emphasized the need for better execution.
A joint training camp practice between the New Orleans Saints and Dallas Cowboys turned into what one coach called 'fight club' on Wednesday. At the center of it all was Saints rookie Brock Rechsteiner — son of WWE Hall of Famer Scott Steiner — who ended one skirmish by suplexing Cowboys safety Jalen Thompson to the ground, according to Newsweek and Slam Wrestling.
The session in Oxnard featured roughly seven separate fights, with punches thrown by players on both sides and Saints center Erik McCoy tossing a helmet during the chaos, Newsweek reported. The brawl drew widespread attention, partly because Rechsteiner's takedown looked less like football and more like his father's signature moves inside a wrestling ring.
The flashpoint came when Cowboys cornerback Caelen Carson grabbed Rechsteiner by the facemask, according to The Mirror. Rechsteiner responded by wrapping his arms around Thompson's waist and driving him to the turf in a move that looked straight out of a WWE match. Video of the takedown spread quickly across social media.
Slam Wrestling reported that Rechsteiner, a wide receiver, had clashed with Thompson during the joint drill before the brawl escalated. Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer acknowledged that both teams were stirring the pot. He said his squad needs more productive work and better execution going forward.
Rechsteiner went undrafted out of Jacksonville State before earning a Saints roster spot through strong tryout performances, according to NewsBreak. Making an NFL team as an undrafted free agent is rare. Fewer than one in ten undrafted players make a final 53-man roster. His path shows both athletic ability and determination.
His road gets harder, though. The NFL has suspended Rechsteiner for the first six games of the 2026 season, Newsweek reported. The suspension stems from a violation of the league's performance-enhancing substance policy. He can still practice and develop with the Saints, but he will miss meaningful regular-season time early next year.
Rechsteiner has not given up on wrestling. He is enrolled in the WWE Next In Line Program, a path designed for athletes with professional sports backgrounds who want to cross over into pro wrestling, according to Head Top Topics. His father Scott Steiner is a WWE Hall of Famer known for power moves similar to the suplex his son just pulled off on a real football field.
The dual track — NFL receiver by day, WWE prospect in waiting — is unusual. But the Oxnard brawl may have done more for Rechsteiner's name recognition than any catch he makes this preseason. Fans and media quickly noted that the suplex looked polished, not accidental.
Dallas coach Brian Schottenheimer used the phrase 'fight club' to describe the practice, according to Slam Wrestling. He said the Cowboys need to get more work done and focus on execution rather than brawling. Still, he stopped short of blaming one team, saying both sides played a role in escalating the tension.
Joint practices are meant to give teams a competitive look against a new opponent. They often get chippy. But seven fights in a single session is extreme. Saints and Cowboys staff are expected to reset the tone before the two teams meet in a preseason game later this week.
