Cyberpunk 2077 Crosses 40 Million Sales Milestone Six Years Later, Completing its Redemption Arc

CD Projekt Red spent over $100 million on patches, fixes, and post-launch development to salvage Cyberpunk 2077.
Sony pulled Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store at launch due to severe performance issues on PS4/PS5.
The 40 million milestone counts both the base game and the Ultimate Edition, which bundles in the Phantom Liberty expansion.
A sequel codenamed Project Orion entered pre-production in May 2025, with CD Projekt Red signaling a four- to five-year development cycle.
Cyberpunk 2077 has outsold several major titles and, in six-year sales, is at least 10 million copies ahead of Witcher 3 according to recent reports.
CD Projekt Red announced that Cyberpunk 2077 has surpassed 40 million copies sold worldwide, six years after its troubled December 2020 launch. Windows Central reports the milestone covers both the base game and the Ultimate Edition bundle, which includes the Phantom Liberty expansion.
The number is a striking turnaround for a game that was pulled from the PlayStation Store at launch due to severe bugs on PS4 and PS5. CD Projekt Red has since spent over $100 million on patches and updates to fix the game — and it paid off.
VGChartz notes the game stood at 35 million copies sold before the latest milestone. That means at least 5 million new copies moved in a relatively short window — a sign that interest in Night City has not faded.
Several things pushed sales higher. Deep discounts kept Cyberpunk 2077 visible on Steam charts. The Netflix anime series Edgerunners brought in a wave of new players. And the 2.0 overhaul, released in 2023, rebuilt large parts of the game from scratch — giving lapsed players a reason to return.
Cyberpunk 2077 launched in December 2020 as one of the most anticipated games in years. But on last-gen consoles, it ran so poorly that Sony pulled it from the PlayStation Store entirely — an almost unheard-of step. Refunds were offered. The studio's stock dropped sharply.
CD Projekt Red spent years rebuilding trust. The free 2.0 patch overhauled combat, police systems, and skill trees. The Phantom Liberty expansion, released in 2023, added a full spy-thriller storyline. Games.gg notes the game sold 35 million before the latest push, showing the recovery was already well underway.
The 40 million figure puts Cyberpunk 2077 at least 10 million copies ahead of The Witcher 3 at the same point in its life. That is a significant gap, given that The Witcher 3 is widely seen as one of the best RPGs ever made.
The lead quest designer and Cyberpunk 2 associate director addressed fans directly after the news broke. Games Radar reported they said, "you are the reason we can do all this work" — a nod to the community that stuck with the game through its rough years.
CD Projekt Red is not done with Night City. A sequel codenamed Project Orion entered pre-production in May 2025. The studio has signaled a four- to five-year development cycle, meaning a release is likely still years away.
The 40 million milestone gives CD Projekt Red a strong financial foundation to build on. DLC sales, the Ultimate Edition bundle, and cross-media projects like Edgerunners have all added revenue on top of base game sales. The once-troubled franchise now looks like a durable long-term brand.
