Dr. Mehmet Oz Defends Trump's Frequent Medical Checkups Amid Transparency Scrutiny

CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz faced repeated questions at a White House briefing about why President Donald Trump has received far more medical checkups than the once-a-year schedule typically expected, including multiple CT scans, despite appearing to be in good health. Oz said he discussed Trump’s latest trip to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center last week and called it “routine,” citing medical results he described as “spectacular,” adding that Trump “likes the results” and that the frequent exams help track health metrics like cholesterol and blood pressure. He also referenced a physician memo describing Trump as remaining in excellent health across cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, and overall physical functions, attributed to White House physician Capt. Sean Barbabella. Oz’s comments came as scrutiny intensified after reports said the White House took several days to release a memo summarizing Trump’s latest physical and that media accounts noted visible issues including swollen joints and bruising on his hands. Critics also pointed to other publicly disclosed checkups during Trump’s second term and called for greater transparency.
Oz said the frequent checkups reflect Trump’s “very meticulous” approach and that he “wants to know all the numbers” and “stay on top of them.”
Oz told reporters Trump’s most recent Walter Reed trip was standard and specified the timing, saying the visit was his “third visit in 13 months.”
In earlier publicly disclosed medical history, Trump had been treated for chronic venous insufficiency—described as a condition in which veins struggle to return blood to the heart—along with visible leg swelling; the White House said there were no serious complications.
After a May checkup, Trump publicly declared “Everything checked out PERFECTLY,” and his doctor recommended he “lose weight and exercise more.”
A White House physician memo quoted by The Hill included additional detail beyond systems-by-systems health, saying Trump’s “demanding daily schedule, including multiple high-level meetings, public engagements, and regular physical activity, continues to support his overall well-being,” and that “Cognitive and physical performance are excellent.”
