Juvenile dies, three others severely injured in Fentress County ATV crash

A juvenile is dead and three others are severely injured after an ATV carrying four children was struck from behind by a Chevrolet Blazer in Fentress County, Tennessee, according to KOLOTV. The ATV was traveling without its headlights or taillights on at the time of the crash.
The driver of the Chevrolet Blazer was not injured in the crash. WALB reports that the SUV driver is not facing any charges.
The ATV was carrying four juveniles when the crash happened, according to WITN. The vehicle had no headlights or taillights turned on, making it extremely difficult to see in the dark. A Chevrolet Blazer then collided into the back of the ATV.
The impact killed one juvenile and left three others with severe injuries. KGNS noted that the injured three included the driver of the ATV. Tennessee State Troopers responded to the scene and are investigating the crash.
The driver of the Chevrolet Blazer was not hurt in the collision. Authorities have not filed charges against the SUV driver, according to Fox Carolina. The ATV's lack of lights appears to be a central factor in the crash.
ATVs are not designed or legally permitted for road use in most areas. Riding one on a public road at night without lights puts riders at serious risk of not being seen by other drivers.
ATV crashes are a leading cause of injury and death among children in the United States. Riding an ATV on a public road — especially without lights — dramatically raises the chance of a deadly collision with a car or truck.
Atlanta News First reported that all four people on the ATV were juveniles. The identities of the victims have not been released. Authorities have not said what the children were doing on the road or where they were headed.
