Ukrainian Forces Face Intensified Russian Starlink Jamming, Adapt Electronic Warfare Tactics

The 422nd Unmanned Systems Regiment in Zaporizhzhia has carried out operations against Russian electronic warfare assets, including destroying two Volna Kupol Garant jamming systems, in some cases in collaboration with Ukraine's Security Service (SBU).
Russia is concealing military cargo and fuel by disguising it in civilian vehicles to protect logistics for occupied territories, a tactic described by Ukrainian commanders as part of Moscow’s countermeasures against mid-strike drone attacks.
Russian jamming devices are not confined to front-line areas; they have been reported installed near towns and military facilities to disrupt drone guidance and Starlink connections used to control Ukrainian mid-strike drones.
Russia is deploying powerful electronic jamming systems to knock out SpaceX's Starlink network and disrupt Ukraine's long-range drone strikes, The Next Web reported. The jammers target the satellite connections Ukrainian forces use to fly drones deep behind Russian lines, hitting fuel depots, supply convoys, and command centers.
At the same time, Russia is hiding military cargo inside civilian vehicles to protect its supply routes from Ukrainian drone attacks, according to Crypto Briefing. The moves mark a sharp escalation in the electronic warfare battle reshaping the conflict.
Russia's main jamming tool is called the Volna Kupol Garant. It can disrupt Starlink connections across roughly 20 square kilometers, according to The Next Web. Ukrainian forces have detected about 10 of these systems so far. The devices are not just placed at the front line. Russia has installed them near towns and military facilities to block drone guidance far from active fighting.
When Starlink goes down, Ukrainian drone operators lose control of their mid-strike drones mid-flight. These are long-range drones used to hit targets well behind Russian lines. Losing the connection can mean losing the drone entirely — or worse, a failed strike on a high-value target.
Ukraine is not sitting still. The 422nd Unmanned Systems Regiment, based in Zaporizhzhia, has destroyed at least two Volna Kupol Garant systems, according to IBTimes. The regiment worked with Ukraine's Security Service, known as the SBU, on some of these operations. Taking out the jammers directly restores Starlink coverage and lets drone strikes resume.
The Australian reported that Ukraine is also targeting Russian supply routes as part of this broader campaign. Mid-strike drones have already contributed to fuel shortages in Russian-occupied Crimea by hitting depots and logistics hubs. Destroying jammer systems is now just as important as destroying the supply lines themselves.
To protect its logistics from drone strikes, Russia is disguising military supplies inside civilian vehicles. Ukrainian drone commanders described this tactic to Crypto Briefing as one of Moscow's key countermeasures. Fuel, weapons, and equipment move under civilian cover to avoid detection and targeting by Ukrainian drones scanning for military convoys.
The tactic creates a serious problem for Ukrainian operators. Striking what looks like a civilian vehicle risks international backlash. Russia appears to be counting on that hesitation. It is a low-tech answer to a high-tech threat — and so far it is working well enough to keep supply lines moving into occupied territories.
The back-and-forth between Ukrainian drones and Russian jammers shows how fast this war is evolving. Ukraine depends on Starlink for nearly every long-range drone mission. Russia knows this and is building a layered jamming network to cut that link. Each side keeps adapting — Ukraine hunts jammers, Russia hides its cargo, Ukraine builds new strike routes.
Yahoo News noted that control of Crimea remains a key pressure point in this dynamic. Ukraine's drone campaign has squeezed Russian logistics on the peninsula. But if Russia can reliably jam Starlink across wide areas, it could blunt Ukraine's most effective deep-strike tool — and shift momentum on a critical front.
