Workers Rescued from Deep Trenches in Nebraska and Michigan, Safety Probes Begin

Two construction workers survived separate trench collapses on June 30 — one in Lincoln, Nebraska, and one in Oxford Township, Michigan — in incidents that are now drawing scrutiny from federal and state safety regulators. Both men were buried under soil before emergency crews could pull them out alive, an outcome that KLKN-TV described as rare given the crushing weight involved.
In Lincoln, a man was trapped 15 feet underground for roughly three and a half hours before rescuers freed him. In Oxford Township, a 35-year-old worker was buried in a 10-foot trench and pulled out in about 25 minutes, according to ClickOnDetroit. Investigators from both federal OSHA and Michigan's workplace safety agency are now examining what went wrong at each site.
Lincoln Fire and Rescue arrived to find a worker pinned 15 feet below ground in what Captain Nancy Crist called a "trench inside a trench," according to KLKN-TV. A wide outer trench had been dug first. Then crews cut a narrower, deeper hole at the bottom. That inner trench walls gave way, trapping the worker. The layered design made shoring — the process of bracing walls to stop further collapse — far harder than a standard rescue.
Nebraska Task Force 1 joined Lincoln Fire and Rescue to shore the walls and stop a secondary collapse. Hand-digging was too slow and too risky, so crews brought in a city vacuum truck to suck dirt away from the trapped man. After more than three hours of work, responders lifted him out in a stokes basket. He was conscious when removed and was taken to a local hospital. OSHA's Omaha office was expected to inspect the site.
In Oxford Township, a crew was installing a septic system field tile on Barber Road when one worker climbed into the trench to glue a section of pipe. The trench was 5 feet wide and 10 feet deep. A wall collapsed and buried him, according to The Detroit News. Oxford Fire Chief Pete Scholz said the team moved fast: "Our guys worked fast... in these cases, seconds matter because of the pressure on the chest."
Firefighters freed the man in roughly 25 minutes. A Medivac helicopter was placed on standby but was not used. He was taken by ground ambulance to McLaren Oakland Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, ClickOnDetroit reported. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard deployed a drone unit to photograph the site for investigators before anything was disturbed.
One cubic yard of soil weighs roughly 3,000 pounds — about as much as a small car, according to OSHA standards. That weight can compress a person's chest and cause mechanical asphyxiation even if their head stays above the dirt. OSHA rules require shoring or sloped walls in any trench deeper than 5 feet. Both the Lincoln and Oxford Township trenches were at least double that depth. Neither site showed visible trench boxes, the metal shields designed to hold walls in place.
Michigan's MIOSHA led the workplace-safety inquiry at the Barber Road site, focusing on the absence of a trench box or proper sloping, according to The Detroit News. In Nebraska, OSHA inspectors from Omaha were set to review the 84th Street and Pioneers Boulevard site. If investigators find willful violations, fines can reach $161,323 per violation under 2024 OSHA penalty rules.
Trench collapses kill about 40 workers in the United States every year, based on Bureau of Labor Statistics data from 2022 and 2023. Construction safety experts say these deaths are predictable and preventable. The key failures repeat: no trench box, no sloped walls, and pressure to finish the job fast. Smaller crews — like those doing septic installations — often face the greatest risk because they have less oversight and less equipment on site.
Both rescues are now being cited as training examples. Lincoln Fire and Rescue praised Nebraska Task Force 1 for the technical shoring work that made the long extraction possible. Oxford Township responders pointed to their 25-minute extraction as proof that speed and preparation save lives. Regulators, however, frame both events differently: the successful rescues do not change the fact that workers should never have been placed in unprotected holes that deep in the first place, according to The Detroit News.
