UK NHS Pathology Departments Routinely Exceed EU Formaldehyde Limits, Putting Workers at Risk

Formaldehyde levels in NHS pathology labs regularly exceed European safety limits, and most labs are not tested often enough to catch the worst spikes, according to a new study from the University of Liverpool University of Liverpool News. The research found that 70% of NHS cell pathology sites exceeded the EU long-term exposure limit, putting roughly 28,000 pathology workers in England at risk from a chemical classified as a Group 1 human carcinogen.
The study, published June 9–10, 2026 in the journal Occupational & Environmental Medicine, analyzed over 1.7 million formaldehyde measurements from 117 NHS departments across 122 trusts Mirage News. When the UK left the EU, it kept its existing workplace formaldehyde limit of 2.0 parts per million (ppm). The EU moved to a binding limit of 0.3 ppm in 2021 University of Liverpool News.
