Weezer Announces 'The Gold Album,' Highlights Raw Sound and Collaborative Return

Weezer has announced their next self-titled, color-themed release—“The Gold Album”—their 20th studio effort, arriving August 21 via Reprise/Warner. The lead single, “We Might As Well Be Strangers,” features Karly Hartzman from Wednesday in a Cuomo-and-Hartzman duet, and the band has framed the project as a return to more collaborative band-room songwriting, including a notable Rivers Cuomo and drummer Pat Wilson co-write for the first time since the band’s debut. Produced by Klas Åhlund and Kenneth Blume (formerly known as Kenny Beats), the record leans into a rawer, louder approach, with Blume saying he wanted “the most violent” Weezer album ever. Along with the previously released “Shine Again,” the album’s tracklist also includes “The Show Must Go On” and “Up In The Clouds.” Weezer will support the release with the Gathering tour, headlining arenas with The Shins and Silversun Pickups as part of a broader March kickoff and fall run that includes a Brooklyn stop at Barclays Center.
Weezer said the album was shaped by a return to band-room collaboration, beginning with the four members “in a room, trying to make something happen together,” and promo materials note Cuomo and drummer Pat Wilson are co-writing the “basics” of songs together for the first time since the band’s debut.
Producers Klas Åhlund and Kenneth Blume’s involvement reportedly came after Show Me The Body connected them, and Blume also pushed for a rawer sound by forgoing “click tracks and pitch correction,” per the report.
Pitchfork situates The Gold Album within Weezer’s color-run by listing the sequence “in reverse-chronological order” as Black, Teal, White, Red, Green, and Blue—and notes that the Blue album is “preserved in the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry.”
Audacy reports The Gold Album is Weezer’s first project since celebrating 30 years of their debut LP—positioning the release as a milestone return alongside the band’s ongoing color-series rollout.
AltPress adds that Weezer teased the project on Instagram with clips of band members in “explorer outfits,” using the line: “The search is on. The signs have led us here.”
