Mother and Boyfriend Arrested as 2-Year-Old Dies in Highland Accidental Shooting

Initial reporting shows inconsistencies in the location details (some outlets cite the 6900 block of Victoria Avenue while others mention Victoria Street) and a time window around 5:27–5:30 p.m., signaling early confusion in incident specifics.
Authorities provided public tips channels for information, including contacting the Specialized Investigations Division at 909-890-4904 and texting or calling We-Tip at 844-909-3006 for anonymous tips.
Some reports note there is no public information yet about who owned the firearm or how it was left accessible, and there are questions about whether there were prior welfare checks or involvement by Child and Family Services.
In at least one outlet, the victim’s name was not released publicly, underscoring ongoing privacy considerations in the investigation.
A 2-year-old boy in Highland, California, is dead after finding a loaded gun hidden between couch cushions and accidentally shooting himself, according to Fox LA and CBS News. Deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department arrived at a Victoria Avenue home around 5:27 p.m. on July 16. They performed CPR, but the boy did not survive.
The boy's mother, Jamaria Cobb, 20, and her boyfriend, Armand Bright, 52, were both arrested. Each faces felony child abuse charges. Bail was set at $1.35 million for each, Daily Breeze reported.
The firearm was stuffed between two seat cushions on a couch inside the home, according to Fox LA. The toddler found it on his own. No adult was watching closely enough to stop him. Authorities have not yet said who owned the gun or how long it had been left there.
TMZ reported the boy shot himself after pulling the gun free. Deputies responded quickly, but the child was rushed to a hospital and later pronounced dead. The exact model or type of firearm has not been released publicly.
Cobb and Bright were taken into custody following the shooting. Both face felony child abuse causing great bodily injury or death, OC Register reported. Bail for each was set at $1.35 million. Neither has been publicly linked to owning the weapon.
A second child was also inside the home at the time. Child and Family Services took that child into protective custody, according to Fox LA. Authorities have not said how old the second child is or what their condition is.
Investigators have not confirmed who owned the gun or why it was left unsecured. CBS News noted early reports showed some confusion over whether the home was on Victoria Avenue or Victoria Street. The time of the initial call was reported as anywhere between 5:27 and 5:30 p.m.
The victim's name has not been officially released. Authorities are asking anyone with information to call the Specialized Investigations Division at 909-890-4904. Anonymous tips can also be sent to We-Tip by calling or texting 844-909-3006.
This case is a stark reminder of the danger unsecured guns pose to young children. Toddlers cannot understand what a gun is. Storing a loaded firearm between couch cushions gives a child easy access with no barrier at all. Child safety experts consistently say guns must be locked and stored unloaded.
Daily Breeze reported the incident is still under active investigation. No charges related to firearm storage laws have been announced yet. Officials have also not said whether Child and Family Services had any prior contact with the family before July 16.
