Meta's Facebook and Instagram Experience Second Major Worldwide Outage, Disrupting Global Users

In Pakistan and several other countries, the outage lasted a few hours with users unable to log in, refresh feeds, or send messages before services gradually recovered.
Instagram direct messages failed to send or receive around 9pm in parts of Asia, with concurrent login and server connection problems reported in Europe and the US; by late Wednesday service had largely been restored for many users.
Downdetector-sourced data showed sizable regional impact, with thousands of users in Great Britain (over 4,400), Italy (about 1,200), and the Netherlands (roughly 1,000) reporting Facebook and Instagram issues, indicating a broad European footprint.
In India, about 1,993 outage reports by 7:13 p.m. pointed to mobile app problems (about 61%), with 19% server issues and 11% website access; cybersecurity experts warned of phishing risks around account-recovery flows, and status dashboards showed no public acknowledgment from Meta.
Facebook and Instagram went down again on July 22, marking the second major outage in 72 hours for Meta's platforms. Thousands of users across the US, Europe, Asia, and the UK lost access to feeds, messages, and login screens, according to Tom's Guide and Analytics Insight.
Outage-tracking site Downdetector logged thousands of incident reports within minutes. Users vented frustration on rival platform X while Meta offered little immediate public comment, adding to widespread confusion about the cause and timeline of the disruptions.
The disruption hit Europe hard. Head Topics UK reported that over 4,400 users in Great Britain, about 1,200 in Italy, and roughly 1,000 in the Netherlands flagged problems with Facebook and Instagram. Users were locked out of their accounts and could not load feeds or send messages.
In Asia, Instagram direct messages stopped working around 9 p.m. local time, according to Tom's Guide. Login failures and server connection errors also hit users in Europe and the US at the same time. By late Wednesday, service had largely come back for most users.
In India, outage reports climbed to 1,993 by 7:13 p.m., according to NDTV Profit. Mobile app problems made up about 61% of those reports. Server issues accounted for 19%, and website access failures made up 11%. Meta's public status dashboard showed no acknowledgment of any problem.
Cybersecurity experts warned users to stay alert during the chaos. Phishing scams often target people trying to recover accounts during outages. Fake password-reset pages and credential-stealing links tend to spike when major platforms go down, experts noted.
Instagram users across major US cities reported widespread problems on July 22, according to SSB Crack News. Downdetector logged 3,371 incidents tied to Instagram alone. Users said they could not load posts, send direct messages, or stay logged in to the app.
Tom's Guide reported more than 2,000 Facebook outage reports when the disruption first began, with the number climbing further as the outage spread. This was the second time in 72 hours that Meta's platforms had buckled, raising fresh questions about backend reliability.
Meta did not post any public update on a status page during the outage, according to multiple reports. That silence frustrated users who had no way to know when service would return. Many turned to X to share complaints and check whether others were affected.
The back-to-back outages — both hitting within the same week — put a spotlight on how much daily life depends on Meta's platforms. Pakistan was among the countries affected, with users unable to log in, refresh feeds, or send messages for several hours before service slowly came back, Analytics Insight reported.
