Victor Wembanyama, Caitlin Clark, and Derrick Rose Featured as NBA 2K27 Cover Athletes

NBA 2K27 will feature three cover athletes for the first time: Victor Wembanyama, Caitlin Clark, and Derrick Rose. Winnipeg Free Press confirmed the announcement, with each athlete tied to a different edition of the game.
The Standard Edition drops on Sept. 4. The Deluxe and Ultra editions launch a week earlier, on Aug. 28, with early access. Wembanyama covers the Standard Edition, Clark the Deluxe, and Rose the limited-time Ultra Edition, according to Click On Detroit.
Wembanyama called the honor "a dream come true." The San Antonio Spurs star is just two seasons into his NBA career and is already one of the most talked-about players in the league. Landing the standard cover puts him front and center for millions of players worldwide.
Clark said being on the cover was "special" because the game reaches fans all over the globe. The Indiana Fever guard has become one of the biggest names in women's basketball. Her spot on the Deluxe Edition marks a landmark moment for WNBA visibility in gaming, according to Voice of Alexandria.
Rose appears on the Ultra Edition, which is a limited-time release. The former Chicago Bulls point guard won the NBA MVP award in 2011. He is widely remembered as one of the most explosive players of his era before injuries slowed his career.
The Ultra Edition is only available for a short window, making it a collector's item for fans. Using a legend like Rose ties the game to NBA history while the other two covers focus on the sport's present and future, according to The Messenger.
The three-cover setup gives NBA 2K27 a tiered launch strategy. Standard Edition buyers get the game on Sept. 4. Those who pay for Deluxe or Ultra editions get in a full week early, on Aug. 28. Early access has become a key selling point for sports games in recent years.
Splitting covers across editions also lets the game appeal to different fan bases at once — casual players, WNBA fans, and NBA nostalgia seekers. Chronicle Tribune noted that Wembanyama, Clark, and Rose each represent a distinct chapter of basketball history: its future, its rising present, and its celebrated past.
