Kyle Schwarber Blasts 30th Home Run, Sets New Phillies Franchise Record
Kyle Schwarber hit his 30th home run of the 2026 season on June 28, becoming the fastest player in Philadelphia Phillies history to reach that mark. The 408-foot, two-run blast in the seventh inning off Kodai Senga powered the Phillies to a 5-4 win over the New York Mets, according to AP.
Schwarber reached 30 home runs in just the Phillies' 84th game of the season, breaking a record held by Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt, who did it in Game 87 back in 1979, Athlon Sports reported. Schwarber also leads all of Major League Baseball in home runs this season.
A Seventh-Inning Blast Breaks a 47-Year Record
With the Phillies trailing or tied late, Schwarber stepped up in the seventh inning and unloaded a 408-foot two-run homer to put Philadelphia ahead for good. The shot came off Mets pitcher Kodai Senga, who had been demoted to the bullpen after going 0-7 with a 10.08 ERA earlier this season, according to The Score.
Bryce Harper added an RBI sacrifice fly, and Alec Bohm chipped in an RBI double. Jhoan Duran closed it out for his 21st save, per MLB.com. The Phillies won the series two games to one. The Mets stranded 14 runners on base in the loss.
Schwarber Has Been Demolishing Records All Season
This record did not come out of nowhere. On May 16, Schwarber became the fastest player in MLB history — by calendar date — to hit 20 home runs, doing it in just 45 team games, according to St. Albert Gazette. On May 12, he had tied a Phillies record by homering in five straight games.
Schwarber is now on pace to hit between 58 and 60 home runs this season. Ryan Howard's single-season Phillies record is 58, set in 2006. If Schwarber reaches 59, he breaks it. He already holds the Phillies record for most postseason home runs with 14, per MLB.com.
A Struggling Phillies Season Turned Around Fast
The Phillies started 2026 terribly, going just 9-19. The team fired manager Rob Thomson on April 28 and named bench coach Don Mattingly the interim manager. Since then, the team has gone 38-18, per Athlon Sports. Mattingly said of Schwarber: "He's just one of those guys that if you make mistakes, he makes you pay."
As of June 28, the Phillies sit at 46-37. They are 3.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East but hold the first NL Wild Card spot. They also own the best record in one-run games in baseball at 18-6, according to Times Union.
Schwarber's $150 Million Bet Is Paying Off Early
Schwarber signed a five-year, $150 million contract extension with the Phillies in the winter of 2025, according to Athlon Sports. He is already delivering on that investment. He said of his own performance: "I feel I can get better... you want to feel you're really putting together some consistent at-bats."
Off the field, Schwarber's charity work has also grown. His foundation's "Block Party" fundraiser in May 2026 was moved to a larger venue to handle demand and has raised nearly $1 million so far, per MLB.com. Fans have already started calling this era "Schwarbin Time" on social media.
