Instead of motors, it uses a material called a magneto-viscoelastic elastomer — a flexible polymer that changes stiffness when exposed to a magnetic field. The core idea is simple. A magnetic field runs through a button made of a special elastomer. Stronger field, harder button. Weaker field, softer button. Sony could flip this in milliseconds based on what is happening in a game, according to Gamereactor.

Then the button hardens around your finger — simulating being grabbed or trapped by something in the game. Jokes about controllers "biting" players flooded social media. But the filing describes a second, less alarming version too: a button molds to the shape of your finger and holds that shape for the duration of the press. The goal is a more natural, custom feel — not a trap, according to Video Games Chronicle.
Sony's filing mentions more than just immersion. Buttons could stay permanently soft for players who need less force to press, or stay firm to block accidental inputs from a resting palm. That would be a real gain for disabled gamers, PC Gamer noted.
Not everyone was impressed. A loud thread on social media pushed back with a familiar complaint: fix stick drift before adding new materials that could fail or leak. Head Topics noted that many users see complex new tech as the wrong priority when basic controller reliability remains a problem.
Multiple outlets stressed the same warning: this is only a patent application, not an announcement. Sony has no confirmed product timeline. The company has patented ideas that never reached store shelves before, including a 2009 filing for "screaming at the TV to skip ads," according to PC Gamer.
Even if the tech ships, its success depends on developers.
