Gemini Secures Full Singapore Crypto Payments License for Regional Hub Operations

The license was issued on Sept. 9, according to the MAS Financial Institutions Directory, which lists Gemini Digital Payments Singapore as a licensed major payment institution.
Before final authorization, Gemini’s Singapore operations were conducted through U.S.-based Gemini Trust Company under an exemption; customers were transferred to the local entity in April 2025 while the application was being completed.
Gemini co-founder Cameron Winklevoss said the company has served Singapore customers since 2020, while CEO Tyler Winklevoss described Singapore as a strategic hub for serving both retail and institutional clients.
Gemini said the approval validates its investment in Singapore and highlighted the country’s regulatory framework and status as a global financial center as reasons it is a natural regional hub.
The license applies specifically to Gemini Digital Payments Singapore and the services approved by MAS, rather than automatically covering every product or activity offered by the wider Gemini group.
Gemini has secured a Major Payment Institution license from Singapore's Monetary Authority, clearing the final hurdle in a regulatory journey that began with in-principle approval in October 2024. Crypto Economy reported that the license was issued on September 9 to Gemini Digital Payments Singapore, the company's locally incorporated entity, unlocking the ability to provide digital payment token services and cross-border money transfers without transaction-volume caps that constrain standard payment institutions.
The approval represents a major milestone for Gemini's Asia-Pacific strategy. Crypto Ninjas noted that Gemini has served Singapore customers since 2020, and the company moved those clients to its local entity in April 2025 as the final licensing stage wrapped up. The license subjects Gemini to heightened ongoing requirements for anti-money-laundering controls, customer due diligence, technology risk management and regulatory reporting.
Gemini's path to a full payment license spanned nearly one year. Crypto News reported that the Major Payment Institution license completes the company's transition from in-principle approval granted in October 2024. Before final authorization, Gemini's Singapore operations ran through its U.S.-based Gemini Trust Company under a regulatory exemption while the local entity's application was still being reviewed.
The move to a local entity streamlined Gemini's regulatory standing. TRON Weekly highlighted that the MPI license permits Gemini Digital Payments Singapore to offer regulated digital payment token services and cross-border money transfers. The upgrade removes constraints that typically apply to standard payment institutions in Singapore, giving Gemini greater operational flexibility for its Asia-based customers.
Gemini co-founders and executives view Singapore as a strategic gateway to Asia. BigGo Finance reported that the Winklevoss brothers emphasized the city's regulatory framework and status as a global financial center. The license validates Gemini's earlier decision to position Singapore as a hub for serving both retail and institutional clients across the region.
Gemini's approved services include spot trading, custody, and over-the-counter trading for clients ranging from individual traders to large institutions. Crypto Economy noted that the license specifically covers Gemini Digital Payments Singapore and the services authorized by MAS, rather than automatically extending to every product the wider Gemini group offers globally.
With full licensing comes stricter operational demands. The MPI status requires Gemini to maintain heightened anti-money-laundering controls and more rigorous customer due diligence. Crypto News reported that technology risk management and detailed regulatory reporting now fall under MAS's direct oversight, adding ongoing compliance costs and operational complexity.
The approval signals Singapore's broader openness to crypto payments infrastructure. Gemini joins other regulated digital payment platforms operating under MPI licenses in the city-state. The move reinforces Singapore's position as Asia's most crypto-friendly financial hub and Gemini's role in serving the region's digital asset markets under formal regulatory supervision.
