Coinbase Unveils AI Agent Tool Enabling Autonomous Crypto Trading and Digital Payments

Coinbase for Agents is a standalone product (not a feature inside the main Coinbase app): it’s described as “a separate account built for agents,” where users connect an existing Coinbase account and Coinbase pitches it as potentially “the only account an agent will ever need.”
For trading, Coinbase said the agents can use Coinbase Advanced, including “extra features like TradingView charts,” via natural-language instructions—so the agent can analyze and execute trades with tooling aimed at professional traders.
On payments, Coinbase indicated that “stablecoins are its preferred payment” method for agent-to-agent transactions through x402—framing how agents will actually settle small payments for things like research and compute.
Coinbase’s AI product lead Lincoln Murr explicitly framed the roadmap as agents becoming the dominant “economic actors” on the internet, telling CNBC: “In the 2010s, every internet company dealt with the transition from desktop and web into a mobile environment. And now in the late 2020s, we're seeing the exact same thing happen where agents are going to be the new primary economic actors on the internet.”
Coinbase launched "Coinbase for Agents" on June 11, a standalone product that lets AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude trade crypto and make payments on a user's behalf The Next Web. Users set spending limits and choose how much control the agent gets — from one-time advice to fully automated trading strategies.
The company frames the launch as a bet on AI agents becoming the dominant economic force online. AI product lead Lincoln Murr told CNBC: "In the late 2020s, agents are going to be the new primary economic actors on the internet" Crypto Briefing.
"Coinbase for Agents" is not a feature inside the main Coinbase app. It is a separate account designed to give AI agents their own financial identity Value The Markets. Users link an existing Coinbase account to it. Coinbase bills it as potentially "the only account an agent will ever need."
Agents can trade crypto spot markets and derivatives right away. They get access to Coinbase Advanced, including TradingView charts, and operate through plain-language instructions CoinCentral. Equities and prediction markets are planned for later. Agents can also run in a sandbox — a test environment separate from real funds — for users who want to experiment safely The Next Web.
For payments, Coinbase built in a tool called x402. It uses the long-dormant HTTP 402 "Payment Required" code to let an AI agent pay for a service instantly — no login, no subscription, no human sign-off needed Crypto Briefing. An agent can buy paywalled research, data feeds, or on-demand computing power in one step.
Stablecoins are the preferred currency for these machine-to-machine payments. According to Value The Markets, 99% of agentic transactions already use USDC, and over 90% settle on Coinbase's Base network. In the 30 days before launch, the x402 network logged 75.41 million transactions totaling $24.24 million in volume.
The product did not appear overnight. Coinbase released its AgentKit developer framework in November 2024, followed by Agentic Wallets in February 2026 — self-custodial digital identities that let agents hold funds with built-in safety guardrails CoinCentral. The x402 Foundation, co-founded with Cloudflare in September 2025, set the payment standard the whole system runs on.
Roughly 157,000 active agents are estimated to be using these financial tools today, with 94,060 unique buyers and 22,000 sellers already on the x402 network Value The Markets. CEO Brian Armstrong has publicly argued that the agentic economy could eventually be larger than the human economy, as machines trade at speeds no human can match.
Not everyone is confident. Critics warn that giving an AI agent real spending power creates a dangerous new attack surface. In April 2026 alone, an estimated $600 million was drained from DeFi protocols due to AI-related exploits The Next Web. If an agent's logic is manipulated or simply wrong, users could lose real money fast.
There is also a fight brewing over the plumbing. Coinbase and Cloudflare back the open x402 stablecoin standard. Visa and Mastercard are pushing their own "Agent Pay" systems built on traditional card rails, arguing those rails offer stronger consumer controls Value The Markets. Which standard wins will shape how trillions of future machine transactions actually settle Bloomingbit.
