Google Publishes Fitbit Air Blueprints to Spark a Thriving Third-Party Accessory Ecosystem

Google has published detailed hardware specifications and 2D CAD drawings for its screenless Fitbit Air tracker, inviting independent designers, artisan makers, and accessory brands to build compatible bands and other add-ons. The documentation includes exact module and sleeve dimensions, tolerance and retention guidance (including snap-in/detach forces), plus requirements to keep the optical heart-rate and SpO2 sensors unobstructed and in flush, consistent skin contact with a recommended minimum sensing-area pressure of 35 mmHg. Google also emphasizes skin-friendly, restricted-substance-compliant materials to help prevent irritation and allergic reactions, including lead-free requirements for certain metal alloys. For commercial partners, Google offers a “Made for Google” certification badge tied to meeting its performance and compatibility standards, and it says certified makers may get access to pre-launch accessory engagement. Since the Fitbit Air launched in early May, hobbyists have already been designing accessories such as armbands, and Google’s move is widely seen as a way to spur a third-party accessory ecosystem similar to Apple Watch’s long-running band market.
Google’s published PDF is unusually specific about the Performance Loop Band hardware: it describes the capsule/"pebble" as 33.5 mm long and 14.36 mm wide, specifies an attachment force of 10–25 newtons, and says detaching the module takes 12–45 newtons to keep the device secure during vigorous movement.
In addition to the open accessory plans, Engadget reports Fitbit Air launched for $100 in early May and pairs with the Google Health app (formerly the Fitbit app) plus “Gemini-powered Coach” for workout suggestions—positioning the device as potential competition to Whoop.
Google Health VP (as quoted by Phandroid) framed the Fitbit Air as the start of a “resurgence for the Fitbit brand,” suggesting the open-spec move is part of a broader comeback strategy rather than a one-off design release.
Early maker experimentation is already going beyond generic armbands: Newsbytes notes the Air’s swappable “pebble” design has inspired “bicep bands.”
