Cobb Police Fatally Shoot Driver After Standoff; GBI Launches Independent Investigation
Cobb police say they attempted to stop a recklessly driven Cadillac SUV on Windy Hill Road, but the driver, 43-year-old Gregory Hill Jr. of Austell, fled and crashed near Windy Hill and Osborne Court. Authorities say Hill refused to exit the vehicle, fired at approaching officers, and that an hours-long standoff ended after officers negotiated for about 90 minutes when Hill allegedly produced a weapon. Police report that Hill was hit by gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene, and they said no officers were injured during the chase, crash, and standoff. Cobb police have requested an independent investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which routinely investigates officer-involved shootings at the request of the local agency. The incident marks the second fatal police shooting by Cobb police in less than two weeks, according to reporting.
