Walt Disney Imagineering has revealed the world's first Coco-themed ride, giving fans their earliest look at the new boat attraction coming to Disney California Adventure, according to Press Enterprise. The attraction is currently under construction on a backstage plot of land between Pixar Pier and Paradise Gardens, OC Register reported. It marks a major addition to the park and is the first Coco ride anywhere in the world.
Ride Story Picks Up One Year After the Film
The new attraction does not simply retell the movie. Its backstory begins one year after the events of the original Pixar film, according to Pasadena Star News. Memories play a central role in the story, which fits closely with the film's themes of family and remembrance.
Riders will journey through the Land of the Dead and encounter characters from the movie. Disney has not yet announced a full list of which characters will appear, but the ride is built around the world and spirit of the original story, Daily News reported.
Audio-Animatronic Figures Will Bring Characters to Life
Disney confirmed the ride will feature Audio-Animatronic figures. These are robotic characters that move and speak, a longtime Disney attraction staple. Using them signals the ride will have a high level of detail and craftsmanship, similar to other major Disney boat rides, SB Sun reported.
Boat rides with Animatronics take significant time and resources to build. Disney has not announced a specific opening date, but construction is already underway on the dedicated plot of backstage land set aside for the project, according to OC Register.
