NOAA Reports Western Wildfire Smoke Spreads Across North America, Impacting Air Quality to the Atlantic

NOAA is tracking a massive, multi-source wildfire smoke event blanketing North America, with dense plumes stretching from the Pacific Northwest and western Canada all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. Fires burning in Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, British Columbia, and the Northwest Territories are driving what analysts describe as one of the most widespread transcontinental smoke events on record. Canada has recorded 4,680 fires and more than 4.1 million hectares — roughly 10.1 million acres — burned so far this season. Oregon alone has scorched over 2.3 million acres, setting a new state record. The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre has raised its national preparedness level to 5 out of 5, its highest emergency designation.
Southern British Columbia is producing moderate-to-heavy smoke that is merging directly with plumes from Washington and Oregon. That combined mass is pushing southeast into the U.S. interior and then drifting east toward the Atlantic Ocean. The Bald Range Fire near Summerland, BC, has already burned more than 33,000 acres and remains uncontained. British Columbia declared a state of emergency after 11 new fires erupted over a single weekend, according to NOAA Wildfire and Smoke Map.

In Utah, the Widemouth 2 Fire has burned 125,081 acres and is only 36% contained as of mid-August. A firefighting helicopter crashed on August 7 in Fishlake National Forest, killing both pilots on board and igniting a secondary fire that merged with the Widemouth 2 blaze. Oregon's fires have destroyed over 2.3 million acres, making 2026 the worst single fire season in state history, according to NOAA Wildfire and Smoke Map.
Portland, Oregon, briefly registered some of the worst air quality in the world in early August. NASA atmospheric scientists tracked how western smoke was lofted into high-altitude jet streams. Those air currents carried smoke thousands of miles east. Analysts warned that descending winds could push pollution down to street level in cities far from the fires, affecting tens of millions of people who are nowhere near the flames.
A light-density smoke layer has drifted east from Canada across Newfoundland and into the open Atlantic, joining the plume from U.S. fires. Studies cited by health researchers link prolonged smoke events like this one to sharp spikes in emergency room visits for heart and lung problems. The EPA lowered its fine particle safety standard from 12 to 9 micrograms per cubic meter in 2024 — and the 2026 fires have pushed many cities well past even that tighter limit, according to NOAA Wildfire and Smoke Map.
Monsoon moisture began moving into central Utah around August 12. The rain helped push containment on the Widemouth 2 Fire up to 36%. But fire officials warned the scorched ground cannot absorb water quickly. Communities like Fillmore and Meadow are now on high alert for mudslides and flash flooding over burn scars. Fire spokesman Karl Hunt warned of continued dry lightning risk from incoming storm cells.
In British Columbia, Donna Haga, a senior air quality meteorologist with the provincial government, has been coordinating emergency air quality advisories as heavy smoke concentrations persist across the province. Utah's Governor Spencer Cox visited affected communities on August 6 to coordinate disaster relief.
