Dawn of War IV Delayed to December 3 for Polish; Year One Content in 2027

Creative Director Jan Theysen indicated the delay is intended to allow further polish and optimization so the final Dawn of War IV meets the high quality the team envisions, suggesting the extra time will be worth it.
Kronus will host four playable factions—Space Marines (Blood Ravens), Orks, Adeptus Mechanicus, and Necrons—along with returning figures Captain Cyrus, Chief Librarian Jonah Orion, and Warboss Gorgutz, set against diverse biomes including the Wasteland, Iceland, Highlands, Hive City and Manufactorum.
Two paid expansions are planned in the first year: a Blood Ravens story prologue releasing in spring 2027 and the Aftermath campaign expansion adding a new faction in summer 2027.
The Year One post-launch roadmap outlines a multi-stage 2027 schedule: Crusade Mode and Map Pack 1 in early 2027; a second map pack with Lord Ahmnok Last Stand Crusade in early spring; a third map pack plus a mission editor after that; and a fourth map pack in early summer alongside Guzcutta Last Stand Crusade.
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV will no longer launch on September 17. Developer King Art Games and publisher Plaion have pushed the release to December 3, 2026, according to WCCFTech. Players who buy the Commander Edition will get early access starting November 30.
King Art cited the need for more polishing, performance optimization, and bug fixes as the reasons for the delay. The studio also revealed a full Year One content roadmap stretching deep into 2027, according to IGN.
The September release window is notoriously brutal. Big titles compete for the same players and the same headlines. IGN reported that King Art Creative Director Jan Theysen said the studio "saw an opportunity" to move out of that crush. The delay of roughly two and a half months gives the team breathing room — and avoids going head-to-head with titles like GTA 6.
Theysen said the extra time will help the final game meet the "high quality" the team envisions. Neowin noted that community playtesting feedback also played a role in the decision. Pre-orders remain open with a 10% discount to soften the blow for fans who were counting on the September date.
Dawn of War IV is set on the planet Kronus. Players can choose from four factions: Space Marines (the Blood Ravens), Orks, Adeptus Mechanicus, and Necrons. Returning fan favorites include Captain Cyrus, Chief Librarian Jonah Orion, and Warboss Gorgutz, according to WCCFTech.
The game spans five distinct biomes — Wasteland, Iceland, Highlands, Hive City, and Manufactorum. Modes include a campaign, Last Stand, Skirmish, and multiplayer. A Painter tool lets players customize their armies before battle.
King Art laid out an ambitious post-launch plan. Early 2027 brings Crusade Mode and Map Pack 1. An early spring update adds a second map pack and the Lord Ahmnok Last Stand Crusade. Later in spring, a third map pack and a mission editor arrive. Early summer delivers Map Pack 4 and the Guzcutta Last Stand Crusade, per WCCFTech.
Two paid expansions are also planned. A Blood Ravens story prologue lands in spring 2027. The bigger Aftermath campaign expansion — which adds a brand-new faction — follows in summer 2027. IGN confirmed both are part of the official Year One roadmap published alongside the delay announcement.
The shift from September 17 to December 3 is a gap of about 77 days. That is a significant chunk of development time. Neowin reported that King Art plans to use it for extra polish and optimization — two areas where RTS games often stumble at launch.
Cinelinx noted the studio's commitment to delivering a high-quality experience at release. For fans of the classic Warhammer 40,000 RTS formula, the wait may sting — but a cleaner launch in December beats a broken one in September.
