World Rabies Day Campaigns Promote Global Vaccination to Prevent Fatalities

World Rabies Day on September 28 spotlights rabies prevention, with this year’s “Stronger Together” theme emphasizing cooperation among health and veterinary professionals, governments and communities. Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, but timely treatment after exposure and vaccination can prevent deaths; dogs cause the vast majority of human cases. Campaigns described across the reports include free dog vaccinations, public education and local vaccination drives, alongside advice to vaccinate pets and seek medical care promptly after a bite. Health officials stress that prevention also depends on responsible animal ownership, bite avoidance and coordinated action.
One report says rabies causes about 59,000 deaths worldwide each year, with most deaths occurring in Asia and Africa.
World Rabies Day also commemorates Louis Pasteur’s contribution to developing the first rabies vaccine; the observance promotes rejecting harmful local practices such as beating a bite wound with a slipper.
In Kozhikode, the fourth phase of the Rabies-Free Kerala campaign is scheduled to run from September 28 to October 27, with vaccination organized through veterinary facilities and ward-level camps using locality-specific plans.
Sukkur health officials advised washing a dog-bite wound immediately with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes, applying antiseptic, and reporting the incident to a health facility or authorities.
The Rivers State veterinary association paired a symposium at Rivers State University with a free dog-vaccination and awareness campaign in Bonny Local Government Area, under the local sub-theme “Stronger Together, Saving Lives.”
