Netflix's 'East of Eden' Adaptation by Zoe Kazan Features Florence Pugh, Expands Story

Expanded ensemble includes Tracy Letts as Cyrus Trask, Martha Plimpton as Faye, Ciarán Hinds as Samuel Hamilton, Joseph Zada as Cal Trask, Joe Anders as Aron Trask, and Hoon Lee as Lee (the Chinese-American valet), joining Florence Pugh, Christopher Abbott, and Mike Faist.
Garth Davis directed Episodes 1–4, with Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre directing Episodes 5–7, both serving as executive producers on the limited series.
Jeb Stuart is an executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Zoe Kazan.
Zoe Kazan has described her adaptation as a 'loose interpretation' of the source material compared to Elia Kazan’s 1955 film, aiming for a more nuanced portrayal with greater emphasis on Cathy Ames and Lee.
The series will feature Hoon Lee as Lee, the Trask family’s Chinese-American servant, a character given a more prominent role in this adaptation.
Netflix has set October 1, 2026 as the premiere date for its seven-episode limited series East of Eden, adapted from John Steinbeck's sweeping 1952 novel Deadline. Florence Pugh stars as Cathy Ames, the story's magnetic antihero, alongside Christopher Abbott and Mike Faist as brothers Adam and Charles Trask.
The series was adapted by Zoe Kazan, who also serves as co-showrunner with Jeb Stuart The Futon Critic. Pugh is also an executive producer on the project, which is produced by FIFTH SEASON and Anonymous Content.
The ensemble cast is expansive. Tracy Letts plays Cathy Ames father figure Cyrus Trask. Ciarán Hinds takes the role of Samuel Hamilton. Martha Plimpton plays Faye, according to Deadline. Joseph Zada and Joe Anders round out the cast as Cal and Aron Trask, the next generation of the family's troubled bloodline.
Hoon Lee plays Lee, the Trask family's Chinese-American servant. The character has a far bigger role in this adaptation than in past versions of the story The Playlist. That deeper focus on Lee is one of the ways this series sets itself apart from earlier tellings.
Zoe Kazan has called her script a 'loose interpretation' of Steinbeck's novel. She said this version aims for a more nuanced take than Elia Kazan's 1955 film, which starred James Dean Deadline. That film focused heavily on the final section of the book. This series covers far more ground.
Cathy Ames gets the most notable upgrade. In Steinbeck's novel, she is one of literature's most chilling villains. Kazan's adaptation moves her to the center of the story JoBlo. Florence Pugh's casting signals the show wants audiences to wrestle with Cathy, not just fear her.
Garth Davis directed Episodes 1 through 4. Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre directed Episodes 5 through 7 The Futon Critic. Both directors serve as executive producers on the series. Davis is best known for helming the 2016 film Lion, which earned six Oscar nominations.
Splitting directorial duties across a limited series is increasingly common for prestige streaming shows. It allows each director to bring a distinct visual tone to different chapters of the story The Playlist.
Netflix released the first official images from the series alongside the premiere date announcement Deadline. The photos offer early looks at Pugh, Abbott, and Faist in character. The show is expected to be one of Netflix's flagship prestige titles for fall 2026.
East of Eden lands on Netflix on October 1, 2026. All seven episodes will be available, though Netflix has not confirmed whether they will drop all at once or week by week Head Topics.
