Chelsea Finalizes £117m Morgan Rogers Deal, Outbidding Arsenal for Six-Year Contract

Chelsea have agreed a £117 million deal to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, beating Arsenal to one of the summer's most coveted transfers, according to Read Chelsea and The Chelsea Chronicle. The 22-year-old has agreed personal terms on a six-year contract running until 2032, with Chelsea holding an option to extend for a further season.
Rogers was widely seen as Arsenal's top priority this summer. Instead, he is heading to Stamford Bridge for a medical, dealing a significant blow to their transfer plans, Evening Standard reported.
Chelsea won the race thanks in large part to incoming manager Xabi Alonso. According to The Chelsea Chronicle, Alonso personally convinced Rogers that Chelsea was the right move. The club laid out a clear plan for his first season at Stamford Bridge, and Rogers was persuaded by that vision.
That personal touch proved decisive. Arsenal were considered the frontrunners before Chelsea made their move. Rogers ultimately chose west London, ending Arsenal's hopes of landing their primary target.
Rogers had a standout season for Aston Villa in 2024-25. He scored 14 goals and set up 12 more across 55 appearances, according to Read Chelsea. That form made him one of the most sought-after players in the Premier League heading into the summer window.
The 22-year-old is a versatile attacking midfielder who can play across the front line. His ability to both score and create at a high level made him attractive to top clubs. Chelsea and Arsenal both identified him as a key target before Chelsea moved first.
The £117 million fee — roughly €137 million — is a huge outlay, even by Chelsea's standards, Metro reported. Chelsea have spent heavily in recent transfer windows, and this deal continues that pattern in a big way.
The six-year contract gives Rogers long-term security and Chelsea a player they can build around for years. With an option for a seventh year, the club are clearly treating this as a cornerstone signing for the Alonso era.
The deal is a major setback for Arsenal. Evening Standard described Rogers as Arsenal's "priority summer transfer target." Losing him to a direct London rival makes the blow even sharper. Arsenal will now need to find an alternative quickly as the summer window moves forward.
Chelsea, meanwhile, appear to have pulled off a statement signing. Landing a player Arsenal desperately wanted — and doing so by winning him over with a clear project — sends a strong message about the direction of the club under Alonso.
