Toronto Tempo Plagued by Key Injuries, Faces Tough Road Amidst Losing Streak

The Toronto Tempo are in a deep hole. A 111-92 loss to the Atlanta Dream was the sixth defeat in seven games, and the team's two biggest stars are watching from the sidelines National Post.
Guard Kiki Rice has been out since June 7 with a grade 3 ankle sprain — the most severe kind. Guard Brittney Sykes has been sidelined since June 19 with plantar fasciitis in her left foot Ottawa Sun.
A grade 3 ankle injury means torn ligaments. It is a serious, slow-healing wound. Rice has now missed weeks of action because of it Toronto Sun. Sykes, the team's other starting guard, went down shortly after with a painful foot condition that makes running difficult.
The back-to-back absences have gutted Toronto's backcourt. The Tempo have lost six of their last seven games. That kind of skid is hard to recover from — especially when your top players are not on the floor Calgary Sun.
With Rice out, coach turned to Julie Allemand to run the offense. Allemand has taken over the starting point guard role and has had to shoulder more responsibility than expected The Province.
Mabry also made an offensive contribution in the loss to Atlanta, but it was not enough National Post. The Dream pulled away for a 19-point win. Toronto simply did not have the firepower to keep up without Rice and Sykes.
The Tempo's injury troubles may not be over. Centre Nyara Sabally is now dealing with a possible rib injury Edmonton Sun. That is a fresh worry for a team already stretched thin.
Sabally has already missed time this season with neck, hamstring, and knee problems Sault Star. Losing her too would push Toronto's depth to the breaking point. The team cannot afford another long-term absence right now.
There is still hope. The Tempo's struggles are closely tied to when Rice and Sykes can return Pincher Creek Echo. Rice's grade 3 ankle injury is the bigger concern — that type of sprain often takes months to fully heal.
Sykes's plantar fasciitis can linger too, but it is generally more manageable Northern News. Until both players are back and healthy, Toronto will keep grinding through a tough stretch with a short rotation and a slim margin for error.
